Strategic Plan 2008-2013

Preamble

Purdue University Calumet (PUC) is a regional campus of Purdue University serving about 9,600 students, located in a highly urban environment.  The campus serves a diverse population of about half traditional students and half non-traditional students.  The Purdue University Board of Trustees created the School of Technology at Purdue University Calumet at the beginning of the 1996-1997 academic year. The School of Technology currently consists of three academic departments housing several degree programs*. The departments are, Construction Science and Organizational Leadership, Computer Information Technology and Graphics, and, Engineering Technology. All of the programs trace their roots back to the mid 1960’s when technology programs were implemented in the Purdue system to meet the increasing need of industry for a technically trained workforce. Originally designed to serve the large manufacturing base centered on the steel industry in Northwest Indiana, all technology programs have diversified as the local manufacturing base has changed focus. These programs now serve a wide variety of businesses and industries. Most graduates remain in the Calumet Region, but those who do relocate are well received by employers in other geographic areas. The School of Technology is committed to maintaining its reputation for high quality, applied technology programs that serve the local region, the State of Indiana and the nation.

The School of Technology at Purdue University Calumet 2008-2013 strategic plan builds on our commitments to student success, community engagement, a quality learning environment, and faculty and staff excellence.  Our plan is shaped by our regional needs and the state of Indiana’s expectations for higher education. 

Vision:

School of Technology at Purdue University Calumet will be the premier school in the region to provide education in technology-related fields and prepare students for professional and personal success in global technology and leadership environment. The School of Technology will be a premier resource for economic development in Northwest Indiana and beyond through applied research, scholarship, and professional development activities.

Mission:

The School of Technology’s mission supports the University’s mission and is committed to the following core values:

• Provide quality programs in technology intensive areas that are accessible to the diverse groups of students, businesses and industries in the Calumet Region.
• Provide students with the tools to become productive and participating global citizens, and life-long learners.
• Provide an atmosphere where faculty can be committed to learning, discovery and engagement are free to investigate, apply and transfer knowledge.
• Maintain state-of-the-art facilities and laboratories where students, faculty, and University staff, as well as business and industry personnel, can enhance their understanding of technology.
• Create partnerships within the school and University, as well as with business and industry, to benefit student learning, technology transfer and regional economic development.

Goal 1

School of Technology will develop and deliver programs at the undergraduate, graduate, certificate and continuing education levels that are relevant to its constituencies*. This includes existing programs, new programs in emerging areas, and alternative delivery of new and existing programs.

School of Technology will strive for excellence of student learning by fostering an environment that nurtures both personal and professional growth.

Goal 3

School of Technology will provide an environment that supports faculty and staff professional development, enhances their expertise, and encourages activities pertaining to scholarly articles, grants and contracts, and participation in professional societies.

Goal 4

School of Technology will offer and expand the graduate programs that are relevant to business, industry, and government focusing on applied research.

School of Technology will continue to seek opportunities for building mutually beneficial partnerships with its alumni, regional businesses and industries, and government
