FREE event to discuss the availability of federal, state, and institutional financial aid programs
Parents of ETS participants should plan to attend at least one of the planned financial aid workshops that will be held on December 8, 2009, January 27, 2010, and February 17, 2010. These workshops, which are being funded partly via a Legacy Foundation of Northwest Indiana grant, will stress the importance of properly completing the FAFSA (free application for federal student aid), 21st Century Scholars affirmations, state aid programs, etc.
During the January and February workshops participants will have an opportunity to complete the FAFSA online, with assistance from ETS staff.

Local educational opportunity programs featured
On Saturday November 14, 2009 educational opportunity programs were featured as part of festivities being promoted by the Barden Foundation of Gary and the Foundations of East Chicago. Collectively, these two programs have disbursed thousands of scholarships to local youth in the Calumet region.
Saturday’s event stressed the importance of planning to be successful at the postsecondary level. Approximately 150 parents and participants were in attendance.

Collaboration with Upward Bound program enters it’s fourth year
Free tutoring for ETS participants will commence on Tuesday, October 6, 2009 at 4:00 p.m. Participants should discuss specific needs with Ms. Maxfield prior to attending a session.

Hoops event to feature college recruitment and vendor fair during Thanksgiving weekend
This event to be held at the Genesis Convention Center in Gary on November 27-28, 2009, will feature historically black colleges and universities battling for hoops supremacy in the Steel City. Additionally, local, regional, and
Indianapolis-area high schools will do battle. Live entertainment will be featured from bands and dance troupes in addition to a coaches luncheon featuring former Purdue basketball coach Gene Keady.
