Healthy Living for College

Students…Easy as 1-2-3

1. Wash your hands. One of the best things you can do to stay healthy during the winter months when living in a dorm is to frequently wash your hands. Germs live on all types of surfaces, but you can eliminate them by taking the time to wash your hands with hot water for at least 30 seconds several times each day.

2. Get plenty of sleep. Many college students shortchange themselves on the amount of sleep they get every night, since there are some many things for them to do in a day. However, students should take the time to get enough sleep, as a lack of sleep makes them more susceptible to colds and flu.

3. Visit the doctor. It is important that college students get a flu shot and other vaccinations in advance in order to prevent them from being sick. Most college health offices provide these to students for a reduced charge or can file them with insurance, thus it is very easy and quick to obtain. They can even dart in to the office in between classes and receive the shot without it being a big hassle.

3 Ways to Save Money in College

3 Ways To Save

Money in College

  • Failure to keep track of your bank/checking account can easily cost you money via overdraft fees. Your debit card can easily get you into the red if you don’t know what’s in your checking account. Think your card will be declined if your account has insufficient funds? Think again.
  • Pay credit card bills on time. Companies charge late fees, sometimes as much as $50 per month. And do not go over your credit limit—that offers just one more way for your credit card company to get rich off your poor judgment.
  • Save that spare change you’ve got jangling in your pocket or sloshing around in the bottom of your backpack or purse in a big jar or can somewhere out of the way. Count and roll spare change yourself. Stay away from those coin-counting machines you see at the grocery store. They will rip you off or at the very least charge you a fee.

4 Tips for College Students

  • Take Advantage of Your Student ID

Many students forget that their student ID is a gold mine for savings. In many towns, students get discounts at the movies, stores, museums, play houses, bars and even restaurants. So take advantage of your student ID and take it everywhere you go!

  • Read, Read, and then, Read Some More!

Read any assignments provided, and most importantly, read that syllabus! It´s given out for a purpose. If you have time to read leisurely, do so! Just the familiarity with texts will help improve your grammar, spelling, and communication skills.

  • Be Careful of Plagiarism

Stay alert in your writing and do not plagiarize. Sometimes you may read something and then unintentionally include it almost verbatim in a written report. These kinds of things happen, but try to prevent this by always citing your sources. Your professor will usually tell you which citation style to use. Professors know the tricks, and should you be reported, you can kiss your college career goodbye.

  • Stepping into a Career

When looking for jobs after college graduation, focus on your studies. Hopefully you considered your future career when you chose your courses. Your college activities should support your post-graduate plans. You should have a major in your career field, but you can minor in an unrelated area. Get involved with campus organizations connected with your career choice, also. Many majors have clubs that you may want to join.

Succeed in the Summer with Good Notes!

Lights, Camera, NOTES!

puc notes

Good class notes are essential to good study skills. If you study bad notes, it’s pretty clear that you won’t perform very well on tests. But what are good notes? Good notes capture the most important facts and enable you to understand how every fact fits into a larger puzzle.

Many students fall into the trap of attempting to write down every word the teacher speaks. This is unnecessary, but even worse, it’s confusing. The key to good notes is identifying the most important things to write down.

Develop a Frame or Theme for Your Class Notes

You will usually find that each lecture has an overall theme or common thread. If you read back over previous class notes, you will see that each day’s lecture will usually address a specific chapter or topic. Why is this important?

Your notes will make more sense to you if you identify a common thread and create a frame of reference in your head before the lecture begins.

When you understand the overall theme or message for the day, you will be able to identify important facts and understand why they matter. When you start with a frame in your head, you can see where each fact, or piece of a puzzle, fits within the frame.
