Supplemental Instructors (SI)

The Supplemental Instruction (SI) Program is a student affairs support service offered to undergraduate students at Purdue University Calumet through the Skills Assessment & Development Center.

SI is offered in a variety of undergraduate level courses including math, biology, chemistry, economics, psychology, sociology, and electrical computer engineering. Participation in SI is voluntary yet highly encouraged.

SI Sessions are free and each course offers sessions twice a week.  SI is an opportunity to ask questions, learn new study techniques, and test yourself before the Instructor tests you!

SI Sessions generally start the second week of classes. The SI Leaders will gather information the first week of classes to schedule their SI Sessions at the most appropriate days, times, and locations. SI Leaders will inform students of the meeting class sessions and times.

Students who attend SI gain a greater understanding of the material and improve their academic skills. They also achieve a higher grade in the class than students who do not attend. Both national and on-campus studies have shown that students who attend SI on a regular basis average between a half and full letter grade higher than students who do not attend SI sessions.

The SI Leaders (SI) who provide the SI Sessions are students who have successfully completed the course with a B or better and have been recommended by the professor to provide assistance to those enrolled in the class.

Skills Assessment and Development Center provides training for SI’s to assist students through collaborative learning and self-developed study guides. The SI’s attend your class sessions, take lecture notes, complete the readings and meet weekly with the professor to ensure that the material covered and discussed in class is accurate with the professor’s presentation of the information.
