  1. Are members of the University police department fully sworn and do they have powers of arrest? Answer: Yes, they have full powers of arrest both on and off campus.

  2. Where do I go to report a crime or incident? Answer: The police department is a brick and mortar building, located left of the 169th street campus entrance and it is marked “Police Department.”

  3. I might be hesitant to reporting a crime or specific incident because of the fear of retribution. Is it possible to report a crime or other incident without identifying myself? Answer: Yes it is. You can call the confidential “Crime Hot-line” at 219-989-2912 (2912 from a campus phone) you will leave a recorded message of the crime and as mush identifying information you can provide. Nobody will try to locate you or identify you. In addition, there is a “Silent Witness” website on the police page. Log onto the Silent Witness and type in your observations or complaints. The message will be anonymously sent to the police department without identifying the sender.

  4. I don’t have a cell phone for communication. What if I am walking on campus and observe something that needs reporting, what should I do? Answer: As you travel through the campus be observant for the stand alone call “Emergency” boxes that are strategically located near building and on each floor of the garage. When you need help, press the button and someone will answer and take your complaint. Assistance will arrive.

  5. Does the police department provide unlock service for people locked out of their vehicles? Answer: No, The police department will refer you to a service in the area that will provide this type of service

  6. What are the hours of operation for the police department? Answer: The PUC police Department is open 24 hours a day, 365 days a year.

  7. If I need an escort, can I call the police department to obtain assistance? Answer: Yes, an officer of the department will provide you with an escort or observe your movement, to locations on the main campus?

  8. What other services are provided by the police department? Answer: The department makes keys, access cards, identification cards, record and engrave personal property for identification purposes; patrol the campus using foot, vehicle and alternative vehicles and are willing and available to speak about safety to campus and community groups.

  9. Suppose I need access to a room or work space, will the police provide me with access? Answer: That depends. You will be provided access to any room or workspace that you have written authorization to enter and remain. After-hour authorization into research areas and class rooms will require authorization from your department head.

  10. I saw an officer riding this cute little personal transportation device, affectionately called a Segway; can I ride it? Answer: NO
