David Ober, a senior computer graphics technology major from Albion, Ind., has been elected student body president at Purdue University Calumet for the 2009-10 academic year.
The 22-year-old president of the Student Government Association served as interim president during 2008-09 while the SGA was restructuring.
“We just want to get the Student Government Association up and running again, so that we can be effective on campus,” Ober said.
Jessie Martin of Grant Park, Ill. was elected vice president. The remainder of the SGA consists of the Student Senate, which is comprised of one student representative from each of Purdue Calumet’s six undergraduate academic schools, and two at-large delegates.
The elected senators are: Neylan Poczontek of Munster (School of Education); Zihan Meng of Beijing, China (School of Engineering, Mathematics and Science); Francesca Cooley of East Chicago (Liberal Arts and Social Sciences); Stephanie Smith of Dyer (School of Management); David Dobson of Wheatfield, Ind. (School of Technology); Kayla Weck of Wilmington, Ill. (School of Nursing); Samantha Bastien of Hammond (At-Large); and Xiao Liang Wang, of Beijing, China (At-Large).
Improving student interest and participation in student government activities were among the challenges addressed by a restructuring committee during the 2008-09 academic year. The committee worked to rewrite and broaden the SGA’s constitution and trimmed the size of the SGA from 30 members to 10.
