Fifth Third Bank partners with Purdue Calumet to enrich middle school learning

To enrich science and mathematics learning among Hammond middle school students, Fifth Third Bank is partnering with Purdue University Calumet to implement the university’s submarine simulation program.

The announcement was made Monday afternoon (3/23) at Hammond’s Scott Middle School.

The program, “Exploration Earth: Mission Ocean,” combines curriculum, classroom experiments and simulation exercises to engage students in advanced science and math concepts. Purdue Calumet’s School of Education developed the program from a U.S. Department of Navy grant received in 1996.

“Research has indicated that an interest in math and science really takes root in a child’s imagination in early middle school,” Fifth Third Bank Indiana Market President Craig Pratt said. “Fifth Third Bank is proud to partner with Purdue University Calumet to enrich educational opportunities for young students in Hammond.”

Purdue Calumet Chancellor Howard Cohen added, “We are appreciative of Fifth Third Bank’s desire and commitment to partner in a program that delivers a challenging, hands-on learning experience through which Hammond students can develop skill levels and learn to work as a team with a common goal.”

Students will use a submarine simulator and NavyOps software developed by submariner Fred Huddleston to learn experientially in a manner that encourages greater understanding of science and technological concepts.

Seeds for introducing the program to Hammond middle schoolers were planted when Professor and Dean of Purdue Calumet’s School of Education Robert Rivers approached Pratt about forming an alliance to address educational needs in Hammond, location of Fifth Third Bank’s newest branch.

Through its Center for Science and Technology Education, which Rivers directs, Purdue Calumet seeks to develop and disseminate innovative technology platforms for science and mathematics learning in P-12 classrooms.

“This submarine simulation program is another opportunity for our Center to advance learning in ways that are realistic, stimulating and enjoyable,” Rivers said.
