Campus Climate Assessment Project

The Survey Research Center of the Institute for Social and Policy Research was awarded a contract by the Multicultural Campus Council of Purdue University Calumet (PUC) to conduct a campus climate assessment of administrators, faculty, and staff members on the PUC campus.

The Multicultural Campus Council is charged with providing leadership and serving as a resource in the support and nurturance of campus-wide activities that enhance greater understanding of the value of an engaged multicultural campus. One of the Multicultural Campus Council’s main purposes is to direct appropriate activities to monitor cultural sensitivity and acceptance.

The goal of the 12-month Campus Climate Assessment Project which began in July 2007 is to assist in realizing PUC’s commitment to the establishment of a community that recognizes and values the inherent worth and dignity of each person; fosters tolerance, sensitivity, understanding, and mutual respect among its members; and encourages each individual to strive to reach his or her own potential.

The methodologies employed during this study will be both qualitative and quantitative in nature. The first phase of the research will include the conducting of focus groups during the month of October 2007. Eight key constituencies have been identified for participation in these focus groups: Black/African American; Latinos; gay, lesbian, bisexual, and transgendered individuals; people with disabilities; faculty members; staff members; and employees born outside the United States.

The second phase of the study will consist of a Web-based survey instrument. Questions for the survey will be developed from themes extracted from the focus group portion of the study. the survey will be fielded in the Spring 2008 semester.

All eligible faculty, staff, and student workers will be invited and encouraged to participate in both the focus group and survey phases of this study.
