On April 18, 2008, the International Programs office took English Language Program students to experience a new type of fun. Who would have thought an “Island” in Valparaiso, IN could contain so many great things?  Zao Island is filled with many activities, from miniature golf to go-carts, and even an arcade to satisfy your video game needs.  Everyone received a treat bag which contained two attraction tickets, a ticket for mini golf, and 20 tokens for the arcade.

We first began the fun by eating some delicious pizza and drinking soda. After everyone was full from pizza, the students ventured out to discover new things. Many students enjoyed the go-carts. It is fun to feel the wind in your hair and race your friends! Miniature golf was another experience in itself. All the students had fun putting the ball and learning not to hit the ball so hard! There were some instances where students had to go fish their ball out of the water. It was all great fun! The weather was very beautiful and sunny. Others enjoyed a nice smoothie and relaxed with their friends. It was a really great trip and a great break from the winter chill.

The annual Student Organization’s Award Banquet was held by Student Activities at PUC on April 19, 2008.  Various PUC student organizations like Indiana Student Education Association, Society for Human Resource Management, Finance and Accounting Club, Chinese Student Association and other organizations, their friends and family members, PUC staff, Vice Chancellor of Student Affairs, and International Programs Office gathered at the Calumet Conference Center to honor the  Student Academic and Leadership Award nominees.  Student members of organizations and their supervisors received awards for their contributions, dedication, and hard work at Purdue University Calumet.

The event started with a nice dinner and live jazzy music by the Scott Pazera Trio in the background. Everybody mingled and chatted together. Everyone was dressed up and looked very nice. Gloria Roldan- Schieb, Director of Campus Life and the Master of Ceremonies, Chad Hunter, hosted the event and made guests feel comfortable and welcome.

Dr. Kathleen Tobin, Head of International Programs Office, awarded our IPO mentors with Leadership Awards for their outstanding dedication in the last academic year.  Four of our IPO mentors, Katherine Walker, Yan Duan, Yan Cao, and Karoline Stiglich went up on stage to be congratulated and to accept their beautiful Student Leadership Award plaques. They were pleasantly surprised by the appreciation shown by the International Programs Office.

The purpose of the event was to thank student leaders for their contributions, dedication, and hard work at PUC and also to encourage them to keep up with their good work or to take the skills they’ve learned and continue building legacies in other areas of their life.

The International Programs Office Mentors, PUC chaperones, and English Language Program students visited Boston, Massachusetts for Spring Break 2008. Boston is such a beautiful city with a great mix of modern and historic culture.  The city made a strong positive impact on the chaperones and the English Language Program students. Visiting the city where the American Spirit was born was fascinating. Our group of thirty-eight people spent five days and four nights in this beautiful city. Each day was packed from morning to evening with fun-filled activities.  We visited many places such as, The Freedom Trail, The USS Constitution, Paul Revere’s home, Harvard University, M.I.T., the Boston Science Museum, Fenway Park, The Boston Aquarium, Old North Church, the JFK Library and Museum, Peabody Essex Museum, Salem, Massachusetts, and the Atlantic Ocean. Everything was so beautiful and captivating. One of the popular activities was visiting Harvard University. That was quite an experience! The campus was very beautiful and filled with so much history!  I joked with many students that this was the closest I was ever going to be to attending school at Harvard University! Another one of the events that brought everyone together is when we all viewed the Atlantic Ocean together. There was a cliff you could climb and see the whole area. Everyone was helping each other up the cliff and taking lots of photographs. It was one of the most beautiful things we have ever seen. It was very magical and I am glad that I was able to share it with such great people. Overall, it was a great experience and the students learned a great deal about Boston.  It is definitely a wonderful place to bring students and give them a dose of history.

Medieval Times

The International Programs Office is always searching for new adventures.  Medieval Times, in Illinois, was the lastest journey.  On March 21st, International Programs Mentors and English Language Program students visited Medieval Times and experienced a show of medieval entertainment and food.  Swords rang as they clashed in the arena. Knights tossed flowers to women to gain their favors and we all ate with our hands. Six knights fought in a tourney to gain the lady’s favor and we cheered on our knight, the Red Knight. Beautiful horses danced before our eyes, showing off their majestic nature. But before the night was through the students watched our knight fall only to be avenged by the White Knight.  Even though dinner was a bit messy since we had to use our hands, we enjoyed the show at Medieval Times before heading back to Purdue Calumet.

A Big Bite of the Big Apple

Wednesday, April 2nd, 2008 - 5:25 pm

new-york-group.jpgOn March 10, 2008, twenty-four students, three IPO mentors, and two faculty chaperones boarded a plane to New York City for Spring Break. In the days that followed, the group saw the major sights, learned about life in the big apple, and had great fun experiencing the largest city in the US.

Some of the key destinations the group visited included Times Square, the Metropolitan Museum of Art, and the Empire State Building. The ferry ride to the Statue of Liberty was one of the big highlights of the entire trip. The students were treated to astounding views of the statue from different parts of the harbor.  Another favorite was the tour of Madame Tussauds Wax Museum. The students took countless pictures as they posed with wax doubles of their favorite celebrities. The group also got the chance to enjoy an evening of Broadway theatre. They watched a production of the hit musical, Grease, and thoroughly enjoyed the experience.

After five days and four nights of intense sightseeing and shopping in the city that doesn’t sleep, the group gladly had a long nap on the plane ride home.
