The International Programs Office held its first ever Thanksgiving dinner for the English Language Program students on November 20, 2007 at the Calumet Conference Center.  The purpose of the event was to give the ELP students, along with invited guests, a tasty Thanksgiving dinner away from home.  The evening began with conversation over traditional Thanksgiving dinner. The students and faculty were able to share in the good sentiments of the holiday season as they were able to partake in each others’ stories over a wonderful dinner of turkey with all the usual trimmings. It was a delectable meal with splendidly prepared desserts including pecan, apple, pumpkin, and sweet potato pies. After dinner and desserts, guests put their dancing moves to work on the dance floor, where the real fun began.  The music ranged in styles from Arabic to Hip-Hop and everywhere in-between, and the dancing was even more diverse.  Sadly, after several hours, the evening did have to come to a close and everyone packed up their things, put on their jackets and went home to rest after a night of eating and dancing. It was a truly American holiday celebration.

Spotlight on Engineering

Monday, November 26th, 2007 - 4:23 pm

The International Programs Office works in close partnership with academic departments to provide international students with information and resources regarding the different programs available.  On November 7, 2007, Dr. Chenn Zhou, department head of Mechanical Engineering, provided a brief lecture about the Engineering programs at Purdue University Calumet.  She discussed the advantages of a career in engineering and interesting engineering topics including sampling with virtual reality games and robotics. The “Spotlight on Engineering” event was a very good opportunity for students interested in engineering to obtain information and mingle with students and faculty in the area.  It provided students with a platform to ask questions like, “What is the difference between mechanical and electrical engineering?” Engineering graduate students discussed their engineering experiences and projects they worked on as well as employment opportunities available after graduation. Students were able to sample the virtual reality games and robot created by engineering graduate students.

The next event will be “Spotlight on Management” in which Dean Duchatelet of the School of Management along with faculty will discuss management programs.  The event is on November 28, 2007 at 7:00 in the Classroom Office Building, Room 110.

The “International Programs Office Mentor Luncheon” allowed the international students and others involved in the international programs to become familiar with the mentors.  The luncheon served as a platform for those leading the International Programs Office and the Mentoring Program to discuss accomplishments thus far in the semester and plans for future goals and accomplishments.  Each mentor was given the opportunity to introduce him or herself in front of the group and give a brief description of their roles in the International Programs Office.  Distributed throughout the luncheon was a newsletter created and developed by Cindy Torres, Mentor Coordinator, and the IPO mentors.  The newsletters spotlighted each mentor and included fieldtrip information and office event activity and our guests were able to leaf through the publication as we all enjoyed boxed lunches together.  It was a fantastic opportunity to meet other students and faculty from other departments.  Overall, it was a good opportunity to talk about the many services the International Programs Office and its mentors are providing for the international students at Purdue University Calumet.

Students Go Bowling

Sunday, November 11th, 2007 - 11:00 am

Bowling is fun activity but it’s even more fun if you bowl with the International Programs Office staff!  On November 2nd, English Language Program students and mentors went to Plaza Lanes in Highland, Indiana to have some fun and relieve some stress.   The trip was fun and competitive personalities came out. The day started at about one o’clock on a Friday afternoon and was a good cap to a long week of classes.  Since there were over 30 students and staff, the group was divided into 6 smaller groups.  But first, everyone had lunch in the cafeteria because bowling requires energy!   After lunch, the games began and for some students, this was their first time bowling.  Overall, it was a wonderful experience for the entire group.
