Intramural Baking Story

Purdue Calumet students use ‘flour power’ at baking contest

BY PHILIP POTEMPA

Tuesday, November 25, 2008

Editors note: Times columnist Philip Potempa served on Thursday’s bake-off judging panel.

HAMMOND | Ellie Chen, of Hammond, called it “a sweet victory.”

The 21-year-old Chen won an intramural bake-off Monday at Purdue University Calumet and now holds the title of “best Boilermaker baker.”

A junior accounting and finance major, she moved to the United States from China more than two years ago to attend PUC and, along the way, has learned to bake.

Chen was one of two finalists among students and staff at Purdue Calumet competing this week in the campus’ second annual baking championship.

Her recipe for heart-shaped strawberry jam-filled shortbread cookies not only took home top honors but also will be served as a standing menu item in the PUC cafeteria.

Last month, 12 participants submitted recipes and prepared samples for preliminary judging based on taste, texture and appearance.

“This year’s theme was a challenge that asked students to compete with cookies that could be either categorized as ‘healthy’ and ‘unhealthy,’ and then we decided to let judges ultimately decide how these cookies stack up against one another,” said Matt Dudzik, director of the PUC intramural program who coordinated the contest.

The other finalist was Diana Virijevich, a staff member in the university’s office of advancement, who said her recipe for banana oatmeal cookies is a favorite of family and friends.

“I’ve been making these healthy cookies for more than 10 years, and, since the contest required that healthy cookie submissions had to be under 130 calories, a cookie with less than 7 grams of fat, I knew these would be a great fit,” the Schererville woman said.

Among the judges were Larry Posen, director of dining services for PUC; and students Jemilah Ellis, 18, a freshman from Chicago, and DeAndrae Haynes, 19, a freshman from Country Club Hills.

Posen said the PUC cafeteria will begin serving Chen’s cookie recipe in January.

Students gathered to watch the judging and cheer on the contestants.

“I really hadn’t ever made many cookies before,” Chen said.

“But I made up this recipe from scratch last year for Valentine’s Day, and everyone fell in love with it.”

A BAKING SUCCESS
Look for Ellie Chen’s winning cookie recipe to appear on the cover of the Dec. 3 Times food section cover.

Twinkie Champ

Congrats to Sam Condes for winning the first ever intramural eating contest. Sam ate 11 Twinkies in 2 minutes beating out 13 other participants.

Participants had the first 10 Twinkies (1 box) unwrapped to start the event. After they ate those 10 they had to unwrap each Twinkie individually.

The event was a success. A total of 1500 Twinkies (150 BOXES) were bought for the event and the promotion of the event.

Also Thank you Twinkie the Kid for coming out to promote this contest!
