HAMMOND, Ind. - Purdue University Calumet will be hosting an exhibition game this weekend, as Basketball Club Partizan from Belgrade, Serbia is set to take on the Midwest All-Stars on Sunday, September 27 at the Fitness & Recreation Center. Tip-off for the main event is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.

Partizan, the most decorated professional team in Serbia, is coming off their eighth-straight Serbian league title. The former club of NBA legend Vlade Divac advanced to the Euroleagues’ Elite 8 a year ago and will kick off their U.S. tour at Purdue Calumet’s Fitness and Recreation Center. The team will also face the Midwest All-Stars in Detroit, Mich., before taking on the Denver Nuggets and the Phoenix Suns in NBA preseason action.

There will be a number of NBA personnel on hand, as each team boasts rosters packed with professional talent. Potential NBA lottery pick Jan Vesely leads a lengthy Partizan squad that has an average height of nearly six-feet, eight-inches. Partizan will look to use that height advantage against a Midwest All-Stars lineup that features a host of former college stars, led by NBA veterans Mateen Cleaves and Scott Pollard along with ex-Wisconsin standout Joe Krabbenhof.

Doors will open at 4:00 p.m. with a youth contest scheduled to begin at 5:20 p.m. Tickets will be on sale on gameday at the Fitness and Recreation Center’s main entrance, however, individuals can purchase them in advance by calling 1-888-215-7067.

Adults will be charged $15 for entrance, while children under the age of 16 can gain admission for $10. Purdue Calumet students are encouraged to attend and can enter the game at the discounted price of $10 with their PUC ID.

Two types of basketball camps will be offered this summer conducted by Head Women’s Basketball Coach Tom Megyesi and Head Men’s Basketball Coach Dan Voudrie.

A Day Camp for boys and girls in grades 4 through 8 will emphasize skill development in a very low-pressure fun environment. Groups will be divided by size and skill levels, and each student will have the opportunity to learn and develop the basic basketball fundamentals. Coaches and PUC basketball players will guide campers through drills, contests and competitions. Campers will also play 1 on 1, 3 on 3, and 5 on 5 games. Cost of the session is $90.

Day Camp Session I runs July 6 through July 9, 2009. Session II runs from July 13 through July 16, 2009. Both sessions are from 8 AM to 11 AM on those dates.

A Shooting School will be held July 20 through July 23, 2009 from 8:00 AM to 9:30 AM those dates for boys and girls grades 4 through 6. A second Shooting School will be held those dates for boys and girls grades 7 through 8 from 10 AM to 11:30 AM.

This camp is designed to work specifically on the fundamentals of shooting a basketball. Every aspect of shooting will be broken down and taught in a systematic and routine method to help a player develop the roper muscle memory reflexes to become a better shooter. There will be instruction, repetition, guided practice and contests daily. Groups will be divided based upon skill level to accomodate every player from the beginner to a more advanced player. Cost of the camp is $60.

Please contact the Athletic Department at 219-989-2540 or e-mail at athletics@calumet.purdue.edu for more information. You can also print out the brochure from the following link and mail it to PUC, Basketball Camps.

HAMMOND, Ind., — A little mortar, some concrete blocks, and a bit of rerouting electrical wires and plumbing. Those were parts of the remodeling job in the women’s locker room and the concession stand in the Fitness & Recreation Center last summer.

The women’s locker room was expanded 15-feet specifically for the basketball team to create an area for game day meetings and viewing basketball game videos and DVDs. Expanding the locker room also follows the guidelines under Title IX, a 1972 federal ruling that provides equality of opportunities in men’s and women’s intercollegiate sports. Both squads now have private locker rooms separating them from the gymnasium locker facilities used by the campus members and the public.

“It was simply a compliance issue that we needed to address,” Assistant Vice Chancellor of Health, Recreation & Sports/Athletic Director Bob Bunnell said. “We want to provide our student athletes with the same opportunities, which include the areas where they prepare for their games.”

While the locker room expanded, the concession area was reduced and remodeled creating a more efficient use of the space. Overhead and wall-attached fluorescent lighting was added. Walls were painted with the traditional university colors, black and Vegas gold, and tiles were placed over the grey cement floor.

Also, table seating was replaced with circular stainless steel bar-high tables, and a stainless steel serving table and storage cabinet replaced the painted wooden serving stand. A new menu with additional selections from last year will be ready for the 2008-09 season.

Inside the gymnasium, graphic artist John McNulty painted the peregrine mascot inside the center circle of the wooden floor, and extended the 3-point stripe one foot further out to 20 feet nine inches for men’s basketball. The NCAA rules committee changed the 3-point stripe distance last May and the NAIA followed suit.
