Rain, Wind, and Steep Inclines Do Not Stop 2009 Ramp Run Participants

The weather forecast for Saturday, April 25th called for partly cloudy skies, mild breezes and temperatures in the 50’s.   Near perfect conditions for Purdue University Calumet’s 9th Annual Spring Fling 5K Ramp Run scheduled to kick off at 9:00 a.m. sharp that morning.

Around 7:30 am weather conditions started to change.  Mother Nature ushered in overcast skies, gusty winds and warmer temperatures.  What happened immediately after the start of the race falls in the category of stranger than fiction and will serve as a topic of conversation for years to come for those who ran or walked in the event that day.

“At first, I couldn’t believe it.  We couldn’t have been more than 30-seconds into the race when the skies opened up and it started raining, thundering and lightening,” said John Tessling, the 20-year old Purdue University Calumet electrical engineering student and eventual winner of the Ramp Run.  Tessling, who resides on campus in student housing at the University Village, also won the 2008 race.  His time this year of 16:38 was a mere 4-seconds off the all time course record.

Tessling added, “It only rained for about 5 minutes and then the sun came back out and weather conditions returned to normal.  What a freak occurrence.  Go figure . . .”

Karen Nagel, a Purdue University Calumet graduate, who currently teaches at Valparaiso High School, won the women’s race in 18:55.  Like Tessling, she won the race for the second year in a row.

Mary Christina Flores, a Purdue University Calumet undergraduate student won the Female Master Division (over 40) with a time of 22:16.

New attendance records were set at this year’s Ramp Run.  There were 412 finishers and 472 registered participants.  New standards for both the Spring Fling 5K Ramp Run and Fall Frolic/Jennie Hamilton Memorial 4-Mile Run.  More Purdue University Calumet students (55) took part in this year event and faculty/staff (37) numbers increased as well.

Metabolic testing now available for members

Metabolic Testing Now Available at Fitness CenterMetabolic testing is a simple, non-intimidating procedure where you sit in a relaxing chair and breathe into a metabolic analyzer machine for 10-minutes. The unit analyzes the amount of oxygen used during the 10-minutes procedure and converts it to metabolic energy or calories. Each test is performed by a Purdue University Calumet staff exercise physiologist. The machine prints out a report with your metabolic information.

Immediately following the test, the exercise physiologist will explain your test results and answer any questions you may have regarding metabolism, exercise or weight control. The test and counseling session last approximately 30 minutes.
