Department of English and Philosophy

Welcome!

The Department of English and Philosophy at Purdue Calumet offers a Bachelor of Arts in English, with options in Literature, Writing, and Teaching. Students also may minor in English. An Online Certificate in Writing for Interactive Media is available.

In literature and writing courses, English majors are introduced to demands of college reading and writing so that they will be prepared for the rest of their academic careers and for their lives beyond college.

Writing majors learn the practical aspects of communicating on the job, in business or in industry, to prepare for careers in publishing, editing, writing, and technical communication.

Purdue Calumet also offers a Bachelor of Arts degree in Philosophy in cooperation with Indiana University Northwest. By this agreement, you benefit from the professional expertise in philosophy available at both universities.

Philosophy offers a sound foundation for careers and for advanced degrees in business, law, government, management, the ministry, and education, as well as a background for any field of study – such as computer science – which emphasizes logical and critical thinking.

The university also offers an Associate of Arts degree with a concentration in philosophy, and a baccalaureate minor in philosophy can complement any major.

The Vision of the Department

Our vision as a Department is to maintain high quality teaching and scholarship in order to support our diverse student majors in achieving their career goals to join the professions we represent in Northwest Indiana as well as nationally and worldwide. We expect them to carry forward the reputation of Purdue University Calumet to an increasingly globalized world.

To support our vision, we seek to prepare our students in the tradition of the humanities in thinking, reading, and writing, through offering them high quality instruction in the classroom, through experiential learning in hands-on professional settings, through travel opportunities, and through distance education These career-oriented studies lead to certificates, associate degrees, baccalaureate degrees, and master’s degrees. They prepare students for careers in business, industry, or the professions with excellent written and oral communication skills, proven research methods, and a background in the best thinking and writing of people throughout history.
