Chancellor’s Reading Circle

Chancellor Howard Cohen Chancellor Howard Cohen

Goal: To expand opportunities for intellectual interaction among students and faculty on campus.

Program: Discussion of books of current and general interest outside the classroom setting. The Chancellor will host three discussions each year at Kuiper House. Participants will include three faculty members and 12-15 students at each discussion meeting. Faculty participants will be selected in the prior year, and each faculty member will recommend a book suitable for non-specialists or non-majors. Each faculty member will participate in all three discussion meetings. Student participants will be selected through the Leadership Development Program. Students may ate d opn or more of the discussion meetings during the year. The aim is to maximize the number of students involved without prohibiting participation in more than on discussion meeting per year. All participants are expected to read the selected book in advance of the discussion meetings.

Books: Books will be selected by the three faculty participants, after consultation among themselves and with the Chancellor. The Chancellor will purchase the books and make them available through the Student Leadership office prior to the scheduled discussions.

Dates: Discussion meetings will be held in late October, late January, and late March. Specific dates will be selected to accommodate faculty participants’ schedules. Meetings will be in the evening at Kuiper House. Refreshments will be served.

Format: Each participant is given time to say something about his/her reaction to the book. The faculty member who selected the book will talk about his or her reasons for selecting it. Discussions will be free-flowing, but structured enough to encourage maximum participation by students.
