PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. — A mixture of poor defense, an off-night for the offense, and an opponent hitting on all cylinders led to an opening round loss for the Peregrines to close out the 2007-08 basketball season.

Trinity Christian College hit 50 percent of its shots in the first half leading to a 50-22 advantage at the intermission and a 92-52 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference win.

The Peregrines offense looked sluggish and tired in the first 10 minutes of the game connecting on only two field goals and three free throws for seven points. And defensively, the squad couldn’t stop the Trolls leading to a 27-7 advantage for the home team with 9:30 to play.

PUC finished the first half hitting only 24 percent from the field, and gave up 17 points off turnovers. On defense, the Peregrines gave up a conference season-high 50 points in the opening period, including 22 points in the paint.

Sophomore Sara Keilman (Morton), who scored the first three field goals for the Peregrines in the low post, led the Peregrines with 18 points and 10 rebounds, and had a pair of steals.

Senior co-captain Linsey Smith (Lake Central) closed out her college career with 13 points, including a pair from the 3-point stripe, grabbed five rebounds, tied for a team-high three steals and had a pair of assists.

Senior co-captain Shannon Dugan (Mother McAuley, Chicago) finished with five points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals in the loss.

The Peregrines closed out the season hitting 30 percent from the field, 16 percent from the 3-point arc, and 50 percent from the charity stripe.

Three Trolls scored double-digits, including junior Amanda Learned who scored 19 points and registered her 1,000th career point wearing a TCC jersey.

REC CENTER — National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ ninth-ranked Cardinal Stritch University used a three-point barrage in the second half to beat the Peregrines, 101-71, in the final regular season game for both squads. The Stritch victory also gave the Wolves a perfect 10-0 finish in Division II of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference.

The Peregrines (7-23, 3-7 CCAC) had the lead for most of the first half, including a nine-point edge, 30-21. But a four-minute drought of offense late in the half gave the Wolves a seven-point lead at the intermission.

Both teams hit 50 percent of their shots from the 3-point stripe in the first half and were above 50 percent from the field, overall. But the Wolves blistered the nets in the second half connecting on 11-of-15 from the arc for a 73 percent success rate to blow the lead open.

Senior co-captains Linsey Smith (Lake Central) and Shannon Dugan (Mother McAuley, Chicago) were honored in pre-game ceremonies celebrating their basketball careers at PUC. Smith, who hit 50 percent from the field, led all scorers with 19, including three 3-pointers. Dugan finished with eight points, five rebounds and assists, and a pair of shot blocks and steals.

Junior guard Nicole Enright (Munster) had a career day from the field scoring 17 points, the first double-digit mark on the hardwood. Enright, who hit 66 percent of her shots, connected three times from beyond the 3-point stripe, including a pair late in the first half that kept the Peregrines within striking distance of the No. 9 team in the nation.

The Peregrines won the battle on the boards with 35 rebounds to Stritch’s 29. PUC also scored more points in the paint, 28-20.

Purdue University Calumet travels to Palos Heights, Ill., for a 7 p.m. tip against Trinity Christian College in the first round of Division II CCAC playoffs. The teams split against each other this season, but the Trolls finished with one more conference win to earn the home game in the opening round.

Defensively, Purdue University Calumet held Calumet College to nine successful field goals in each half, which led to a 31 percent success rate in the first 20 minutes and 29 percent in the second half. The Peregrines defense held the Crimson Wave to 22 points under the season average against all Peregrine opponents.

Senior co-captain Smith, the CCAC scoring leader averaging 16.4 points per game, led all scorers and was five-points above her season average. Three other Peregrines also hit the double-digit mark.

Senior co-captain Shannon Dugan (Mother McAuley, Chicago) had her third consecutive double-double finishing with 14 points and 10 rebounds. She also had four assists and a shot block in the win.

The Peregrines hit their season average of 13 assists per game and were 12 points above their season average of 67 points per game. It was the second time this season the Peregrines (7-21, 3-5 CCAC) beat the Crimson Wave.

The Peregrines travel to Deerfield, Ill., next Wednesday for a CCAC Division II game against Trinity International University at 5:30 p.m. It’s the first game of a basketball doubleheader with the men who tip at 7:30 p.m.

REC CENTER — In the second half, the Peregrines offense clicked at just under 40 percent from the field. But they couldn’t overcome a 26 percent shooting performance in the first 20 minutes leading to a 74-61 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference loss to Judson University on Saturday in the first of two homecoming games.

The Peregrines (6-21, 2-5 CCAC) struggled from the field to open the game and failed to hit the double-digit mark until eight-plus minutes into the first half, which led to a 15-point deficit at the break.

The Eagles (9-14, 4-3) kept the Peregrines in the hole through most of the second half gaining as much as a 19-point lead. But the Peregrines clawed back to within 11 points in the final minute of action.

For the second consecutive game, senior co-captain Shannon Dugan (Mother McAuley, Chicago) finished with a double-double scoring 17 points to lead the team, and grabbed 10 rebounds in the loss.

Senior co-captain Linsey Smith (Lake Central) and freshman Cortney Robinson (Hebron) finished with identical numbers; 11 points and five rebounds. Smith’s points included three 3-point field goals.

Off the bench, Nicole Enright (Munster) shot 80 percent from the field and scored nine points. Starting point guard Meme Harris (Merrillville) dished out a game-high seven assists, scored six points and had three steals.

The Peregrines travel across town to the Hammond Civic Center, the home of Calumet College, for a 5 p.m. tip on Wednesday in the first of a doubleheader with the men’s team who play at 7 p.m. Last month, the Peregrines beat the Crimson Wave 89-64 at the PUC Recreation Center.
