Olivet’s 3-point pressure hangs 97-74 loss on Peregrines

REC CENTER — It’s widely known in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference that the Olivet Nazarene University Tigers live and die from the 3-point stripe making it difficult for opposing teams to draw up a defensive plan. The Tigers flung up 49 3-pointers Saturday hitting 16, enough to beat the Peregrines 97-74 on homecoming.

The Peregrines (10-17) edged the Tigers (15-10) from the field in the opening half hitting 43 percent compared to 42. But the Tigers hit 11 of their 3-pointers to hold a 55-46 lead at the intermission.

Sophomore Meme HarrisSophomore point guard Meme Harris (Merrillville) dropped in a layup four minutes into the second half drawing the Peregrines to within five points of the Tigers. But during the next three minutes, the Tigers pushed the lead to double digits and never let the Peregrines get closer.

Harris led the Peregrines with 20 points, four assists and three steals. She leads the CCAC averaging 6.3 assists per game and ranks in the top ten averaging 12.8 points per game.

Senior LaKeisha Hurst (Dover, Del.) registered her 10th double-double of the season with 19 points and 10 rebounds. Hurst ranks second in the CCAC in both statistical categories with a 19.8 scoring and 11.4 rebounding per game average.

Freshman Stephaine Beck (Mishawaka) hit four 3-pointers and finished with 14 points and grabbed six rebounds. She is the team’s fourth leading scorer averaging 12.3 per game.

The Peregrines host conference leader Cardinal Stritch University on Wednesday at 5:30 p.m. in the first game of a basketball doubleheader in the final regular season home game.
