ELGIN, Ill. — Trailing by 15 points with 2:03 left to play, two Peregrines heated up the offense and shaved off 12 points to pull to 78-75 with 43 seconds on the clock. Sophomores Jenny Britton (Lake Central) and Chrissy Lobodinski (Merrillville) combined for a dozen points in 70 seconds forcing the homecrowd to the edge of their seats in Saturday’s Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference game.
After a Judson timeout, the Peregrines were whistled for a foul sending Eagle Crystal Goodall to the line for a pair, which she hit for an 80-75 lead.
A Peregrine turnover and a missed field goal attempt put the ball back in Goodall’s hands with 15 seconds left, and the Peregrines put her at the line for two more free throws. She hit one giving the Eagles a six-point lead.
The Peregrines (8-11, 2-2) missed on their next attempt, but freshman Nicci Desimone (Elkhart Memorial) rebounded and found Stephaine Beck (Mishawaka) who drained a 3-pointer closing the gap to 81-78 with less than three seconds remaining. That was as close as the Peregrines could get in the final seconds.
Britton, the team’s leading scorer averaging 13.4 per game, led the Peregrines with 19 points shooting 50 percent from the field, including three 3-pointers.
Beck finished with 16 points, also hitting three 3-pointers, and added three assists. Beck is the second leading scorer averaging 12.1 per game.
For the fourth time this season, senior LaKeisha Hurst (Dover, Del.) scored a double-double finishing with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Hurst is averaging 11.4 points and 7.9 rebounds per game this season.
Lobodinski also connected on a double-double, her second of the season, scoring a dozen points and grabbed 10 rebounds in the loss. She also had a pair of assists and steals, and she leads the team averaging 8.4 rebounds per game, while scoring 9.9 per game.
The Peregrines held a 7-point lead midway through the first half, but lost the lead when the Eagle offense got hot hitting 53 percent from the field and closed the half with a 43-38 lead.
