Hurst double-doubles, Peregrines grab CCAC win

REC CENTER — Four Peregrines tallied double digits, including senior LaKeisha Hurst (Dover, Del.) who registered her third double-double of the season leading PUC to the 81-56 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference win beating Calumet College.

Senior LaKeisha HurstHurst led all rebounders pulling down 14 boards and tied for game-high scoring honors finishing with 14 points. The senior is the team’s second leading rebounder averaging 7.3 per game and is averaging11.3 points per game. She is among five Peregrines averaging double digits on the season.

The Peregrines held a 16-point lead at the break hitting 48 percent from the field and 57 percent from the 3-point stripe. They pushed the lead to 24 in the first five minutes of the second half and cruised to the victory.

Point guard Meme Harris (Merrillville) led the game with eight assists and popped in 13 points. The sophomore leads the Peregrines averaging five assists per game and is tied for second averaging 11.9 points per game.

Freshman Nicci Desimone (Elkhart Memorial) also scored 13 points, including three 3-pointers, shooting 55 percent from the field. Desimone is averaging 7.4 points per game in her first season with the Peregrines.

Freshman Stephaine Beck (Mishawaka) scored a dozen points hitting 50 percent from the field, including a pair from the 3-point stripe. Beck is tied for second in the scoring column for the Peregrines averaging 11.9 per game.

Junior Sara Keilman (Hammond Morton) grabbed a season-high 11 rebounds and added eight points in the win. Sophomore Jenny Britton (Lake Central), the team’s leading scorer at 13.4 per game, also scored eight, including a pair of 3-pointers, and she grabbed a season-high seven rebounds. 

With the victory, the Peregrines (8-10 overall, 2-1 CCAC) passed last season’s seven total wins. The Peregrines won in the rebounding department, 49-36, and dished out 20 assists compared to the Crimson Wave’s five.

PUC travels to Judson University, Elgin, Ill., (8-8, 0-1) Saturday for a 5:30 p.m. start in the first game of a doubleheader with the men’s squad who play at 7:30 p.m.
