REC CENTER — With the scored tied, 78-78, and 11 seconds left in regulation, Indiana University Northwest’s 6-3 forward, Shannon Houston (Merrillville), was streaking to the basket unguarded. But before she could sink an uncontested layup, she was whistled for traveling, which pushed head coach Ryan Shelton over the edge as he slammed his clipboard down on the court.
The action prompted a technical foul on the IUN bench sending Peregrine Jenny Britton (Lake Central) to the foul line for two shots. The sophomore calmy dropped in both shots, for an 80-78 lead, and the eventual game winning points, with eight ticks left on the clock.
After the charity shots, the Peregrines (4-8) inbounded the ball to point guard Meme Harris (Merrillville) who was immediately fouled. Harris, nine points and two assists, hit the first shot for an 81-78 advantage, but missed the second.
IUN’s Jennelle Kapelinski (Lake Central) grabbed the rebound and pushed the ball up the court for a last second 3-point attempt, but was short as the buzzer blasted for an 81-78 win for the Peregrines.
Britton, the second leading scorer for the Peregrines averaging 11.7 points per game, led the team in scoring for the fifth time this season finishing with 21 points, including the only two free throws she shot at the end of the game. Britton shot 58 percent from the field, including 5-for-8 (62 percent) from the 3-point stripe.
Freshman Stephaine Beck (Mishawaka) shot 50 percent from the field and 75 percent from the 3-point stripe knocking in 17 points, and she grabbed six rebounds and had three steals in the win. Beck is the team’s leading scorer averaging 12.7 per game.
Senior LaKeisha Hurst (Dover, Del.) registered her first double-double of the season scoring a season-high 15 points, while grabbing a team-high 11 rebounds. Sophomore Chrissy Lobodinski (Merrillville), the Peregrines leading rebounder with eight per game, grabbed 10 rebounds and had three steals.
The RedHawks (7-7) Houston had game-high honors with 28 points and 15 rebounds in the loss. Three other players scored in double figures, including Nina Wills (Bishop Noll) who finished with 14 points.
