REC CENTER — Bench players were essentially rewarded with the day off Saturday as the starting five did the most damage for the Peregrines in the 83-64 win against Illinois Institute of Technology. PUC hit 43 percent of its shots in the first half and held a 10-point advantage heading into the locker room.
In the second 20 minutes, the Peregrines (5-8) added more fuel to their offensive tank and drained 7-of-8 from the 3-point stripe (87 percent) blowing the game open. The team also increased their overall shooting performance hitting 52 percent in the second half.
Senior LaKeisha Hurst (Dover, Del.) led all scorers with 18 hitting 50 percent from the field, and she led the Peregrines with nine rebounds just missing a double-double in consecutive games. Hurst is averaging 7.3 points and 6.4 rebounds per game.
Sophomore guards Jenny Britton (Lake Central) and Meme Harris (Merrillville) each scored 15 points, Britton canned 5-of-6 from the 3-point stripe, and Harris shot 55 percent from the field and led the team with four steals.
Freshman Stephaine Beck (Mishawaka) and sophomore Chrissy Lobodinski (Merrillville) scored 14 points each. Beck finished with five rebounds, while Lobodinski, the team’s leading rebounder averaging 8.2 per game, grabbed six in the win.

REC CENTER — With the scored tied, 78-78, and 11 seconds left in regulation, Indiana University Northwest’s 6-3 forward, Shannon Houston (Merrillville), was streaking to the basket unguarded. But before she could sink an uncontested layup, she was whistled for traveling, which pushed head coach Ryan Shelton over the edge as he slammed his clipboard down on the court.
The action prompted a technical foul on the IUN bench sending Peregrine Jenny Britton (Lake Central) to the foul line for two shots. The sophomore calmy dropped in both shots, for an 80-78 lead, and the eventual game winning points, with eight ticks left on the clock.
After the charity shots, the Peregrines (4-8) inbounded the ball to point guard Meme Harris (Merrillville) who was immediately fouled. Harris, nine points and two assists, hit the first shot for an 81-78 advantage, but missed the second.
IUN’s Jennelle Kapelinski (Lake Central) grabbed the rebound and pushed the ball up the court for a last second 3-point attempt, but was short as the buzzer blasted for an 81-78 win for the Peregrines.

HAMMOND, Ind. — While the men’s team hosts three games in a busy week of basketball, the women will also gear up for a pair of home games starting Wednesday at 7 p.m. facing backyard rival Indiana University Northwest. The RedHawks (7-6) lost a pair of contests last week in the Indiana Tech Tournament.
The RedHawks are averaging 64.3 points per game compared to the Peregrines (3-8) 68.8. This will be the first time in two seasons that the Peregrine women meet an NAIA opponent from the Gary campus.
On Saturday, in the first game of a doubleheader with the men’s team, the Peregrines face the Illinois Institute of Technology Scarlet Hawks at 1 p.m. The Peregrines earned
their first win of the season beating the Scarlet Hawks, 62-58, last month in Chicago.

REC CENTER — With less than 10 seconds to play and the Peregrines up 71-70, LaKeisha Hurst (Dover, Del.) stepped to the free throw line for a pair. The senior missed her first attempt, what many shooters call the toughest to hit in a pressure situation. But her second attempt was smooth and flawless giving the Peregrines a two-point edge.
The Saints pushed the ball up the court quickly for a jumper that missed, and Hurst, battling three Saint rebounders, ripped the ball off the glass and was fouled. Hurst again stepped to the foul line for two shots and hit nothing but the bottom of the net on both attempts giving the Peregrines a four-point lead with less than five seconds on the clock.
Again, the Saints hurried up the court attempting a 3-pointer that missed badly as the buzzer sounded giving the Peregrines a 74-70 win for their second home victory of the season.
Hurst finished with 17 points, her season best, hitting 46 percent from the field, including 5-of-7 from the charity stripe. She also grabbed six rebounds in the win.
