Lady Saints cash in on Peregrine turnovers, hit century mark, 100-67

JOLIET, Ill. — The University of Saint Francis Lady Saints forced the Peregrines into a season-high 30 turnovers accounting for 36 points in the game. The 30 turnovers was nearly double what the Peregrines commited in their season opener against the Lady Saints, and a big reason for the 100-67 nonconference loss.

Purdue University Calumet (2-7) was within five points (34-29) with a little more than five minutes to play in the first half. USF (4-3) strapped on the offensive feed bag and finished the half on a 20-5 run and a 20-point advantage at halftime.

Jenny BrittonJenny Britton (Lake Central) led the Peregrines in scoring for the third consecutive game with 14 points, including four 3-pointers. The sophomore was 4-of-9 (44 percent) from the 3-point stripe, eight percentage points higher than her season average. She is the Peregrines second leading scorer averaging 12.3 points per game.

Freshman Nicci Desimone (Elkhart Memorial) finished with 12 points, including a pair of 3-pointers, and had two assists in the loss. Desimone is averaging 6.9 points per game in her first season with the Peregrines. (more…)

Three Peregrines score double digits in come-from-behind road win

CHICAGO — In the second half, the Peregrines forced the offensive action and clamped down defensively for a 62-58 win against the Illinois Institute of Technology Scarlet Hawks. The Peregrines shot just under 40 percent in the second half, but went to the charity stripe nearly four times more than their opponent contributing to a 40-point half.

Jenny BrittonSophomore guard Jenny Britton (Lake Central) led all scorers with 16 points, including three from the 3-point stripe, was 5-of-7 (71 percent) and she had two steals. Britton has a three-game streak for scoring double digits.

Chrissy Lobodinski (Merrillville), the team’s leading rebounder at 8.3 per game, finished with four, scored 13, grabbed a pair of steals and had one shot block. Freshman Nicci Desimone (Elkhart Memorial) also scored 13 points, including five from the free throw line. Sara Keilman led the Peregrines with six rebounds and added seven points of offense.

The Peregrine defense finished with 12 steals led by point guard Meme Harris (Merrillville) who swiped three, and accounted for half of IIT’s (1-4) 24 turnovers.

Bethel Lady Pilots edge Peregrines in closing seconds, 80-76

REC CENTER — When Peregrine guard Meme Harris swiped the ball with eight seconds left she had one thought, make the layup and tie the game. Harris (Merrillville) came up short at the basket and immediately fouled Lady Pilot Brittany Cook who grabbed the rebound off the missed shot. Cook hit two free throws to ice the game for the visitors for the 80-76 win.

The Peregrines (1-6) trailed by seven with just under three minutes to play before mounting a comeback. Freshman Stephaine Beck (Mishawaka) drilled her third 3-pointer of the game drawing the Peregrines to 71-67.

Jenny BrittonLady Pilot Kelsy McKee canned a pair of free throws when Beck was tagged with her only foul of the game. Twenty seconds later, Peregrine leading scorer Jenny Britton (Lake Central) missed a 3-point attempt, but collected her second steal of the game from Bethel’s Cook.

Britton, who finished with 15 points, including four 3-pointers, nailed a 3-pointer closing the gap to 73-70. Both teams traded free throws during the next 90 seconds, including freshman Nicci Desimone (Elkhart Memorial) who was fouled on a 3-point attempt and calmly swished all three free throws knotting the game at 75-75, the eighth tie of the game.

Nationally ranked St. Xavier’s offense too much for Peregrines

CHICAGO, Ill. — Division I No. 13 St. Xavier had its offense clicking in high gear Saturday scoring 58 points in the first half en route to a 98-87 win against the visiting Peregrines. The Cougars (2-0) hit nearly 45 percent of their 2-point field goals in the opening 20 minutes and added 15 more points from the 3-point stripe in the nonconference victory.

The Peregrines closed the gap to 13 (91-78) in the final 3:30, but couldn’t draw closer.

Sophomore Jenny Britton (Lake Central) led Purdue University Calumet (1-5) with 26 points, her season high. Britton had the hot hand hitting 7-of-10 from the 3-point stripe and shot 57 percent for the game. She also had three steals and three assists in the road loss.

Meme HarrisSophomore point guard Meme Harris (Merrillville) scored 17 points, had eight rebounds and five assists. Freshman Stephaine Beck (Mishawaka) was perfect at the free throw line on 10 attempts finishing with 16 points.

Junior Sara Keilman (Hammond Morton) scored 11, grabbed seven rebounds and had three assists. Sophomore Chrissy Lobodinski (Merrillville) led the Peregrines with 10 rebounds, while chipping in nine points.

The Peregrines host Bethel College, Ind., Tuesday at 5 p.m. in the first game of a doubleheader with the men’s team.

Davenport University Cougars slip past Peregrines, 90-79

REC CENTER — Davenport’s deep bench accounted for 47 points Tuesday night, and 12 of 14 Cougars who played registered points leading to the 90-79 win against the home team, Purdue University Calumet. The Peregrines (1-4) trailed by as many as 12 late in the second half before Sara Keilman (Hammond Morton) tossed in a 3-footer to close the gap to five points, but that was as close as PUC could get.

Stephaine BeckFreshman Stephaine Beck (Mishawaka) scored a season high 23 points hitting 64 percent from the field, including a pair of 3-pointers. It was her second game this season cracking the 20-point margin.

Four Peregrines scored double digits in the contest with freshman Nicci Desimone (Elkhart Memorial) cashing in for 11 points, four assists and three 3-pointers. Sophomores Chrissy Lobodinski (Merrillville) and Jenny Britton (Lake Central) eached scored 10. Meme Harris (Merrillville) led the squad with six assists and added nine points in the loss.

The Peregrines faired better from the field than their last road loss. They shot 60 percent in the second half and finished shooting 52 percent from the field, including a 45 percent success rate from the 3-point stripe.

Next Tuesday, Nov. 18, both Peregrine teams host Bethel College in a rare weekday doubleheader. The women tip at 5 p.m. and the men at 7 p.m.
