Peregrines falter in first half leading to CCAC playoff loss

PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. — A mixture of poor defense, an off-night for the offense, and an opponent hitting on all cylinders led to an opening round loss for the Peregrines to close out the 2007-08 basketball season.

Trinity Christian College hit 50 percent of its shots in the first half leading to a 50-22 advantage at the intermission and a 92-52 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference win.

The Peregrines offense looked sluggish and tired in the first 10 minutes of the game connecting on only two field goals and three free throws for seven points. And defensively, the squad couldn’t stop the Trolls leading to a 27-7 advantage for the home team with 9:30 to play.

PUC finished the first half hitting only 24 percent from the field, and gave up 17 points off turnovers. On defense, the Peregrines gave up a conference season-high 50 points in the opening period, including 22 points in the paint.

Sophomore Sara Keilman (Morton), who scored the first three field goals for the Peregrines in the low post, led the Peregrines with 18 points and 10 rebounds, and had a pair of steals.

Senior co-captain Linsey Smith (Lake Central) closed out her college career with 13 points, including a pair from the 3-point stripe, grabbed five rebounds, tied for a team-high three steals and had a pair of assists.

Senior co-captain Shannon Dugan (Mother McAuley, Chicago) finished with five points, five rebounds, four assists and three steals in the loss.

The Peregrines closed out the season hitting 30 percent from the field, 16 percent from the 3-point arc, and 50 percent from the charity stripe.

Three Trolls scored double-digits, including junior Amanda Learned who scored 19 points and registered her 1,000th career point wearing a TCC jersey.
