REC CENTER — National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics’ ninth-ranked Cardinal Stritch University used a three-point barrage in the second half to beat the Peregrines, 101-71, in the final regular season game for both squads. The Stritch victory also gave the Wolves a perfect 10-0 finish in Division II of the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference.
The Peregrines (7-23, 3-7 CCAC) had the lead for most of the first half, including a nine-point edge, 30-21. But a four-minute drought of offense late in the half gave the Wolves a seven-point lead at the intermission.
Both teams hit 50 percent of their shots from the 3-point stripe in the first half and were above 50 percent from the field, overall. But the Wolves blistered the nets in the second half connecting on 11-of-15 from the arc for a 73 percent success rate to blow the lead open.
Senior co-captains Linsey Smith (Lake Central) and Shannon Dugan (Mother McAuley, Chicago) were honored in pre-game ceremonies celebrating their basketball careers at PUC. Smith, who hit 50 percent from the field, led all scorers with 19, including three 3-pointers. Dugan finished with eight points, five rebounds and assists, and a pair of shot blocks and steals.
Junior guard Nicole Enright (Munster) had a career day from the field scoring 17 points, the first double-digit mark on the hardwood. Enright, who hit 66 percent of her shots, connected three times from beyond the 3-point stripe, including a pair late in the first half that kept the Peregrines within striking distance of the No. 9 team in the nation.
The Peregrines won the battle on the boards with 35 rebounds to Stritch’s 29. PUC also scored more points in the paint, 28-20.
Purdue University Calumet travels to Palos Heights, Ill., for a 7 p.m. tip against Trinity Christian College in the first round of Division II CCAC playoffs. The teams split against each other this season, but the Trolls finished with one more conference win to earn the home game in the opening round.
