HAMMOND, Ind. — On offense, the Peregrines had four players finish with double digits, including game-high scorer Linsey Smith (Lake Central) who pumped in 20 and hit three from the 3-point stripe.
But the Peregrines defense was suffocating in both halves limiting the Crimson Wave to 30 percent from the field in the 79-61 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference win at the Hammond Civic Center Wednesday night.
Defensively, Purdue University Calumet held Calumet College to nine successful field goals in each half, which led to a 31 percent success rate in the first 20 minutes and 29 percent in the second half. The Peregrines defense held the Crimson Wave to 22 points under the season average against all Peregrine opponents.
Senior co-captain Smith, the CCAC scoring leader averaging 16.4 points per game, led all scorers and was five-points above her season average. Three other Peregrines also hit the double-digit mark.
Senior co-captain Shannon Dugan (Mother McAuley, Chicago) had her third consecutive double-double finishing with 14 points and 10 rebounds. She also had four assists and a shot block in the win.
Meme Harris (Merrillville) also scored 14 points, including an 80 percent performance from the charity stripe, and had a game-high five assists. Harris also leads the conference with 4.75 assists per game.
Sophomore Sara Keilman (Morton) collected her second double-double of the season scoring 12 points and grabbed a dozen rebounds. The forward also had one shot block.
The Peregrines hit their season average of 13 assists per game and were 12 points above their season average of 67 points per game. It was the second time this season the Peregrines (7-21, 3-5 CCAC) beat the Crimson Wave.
The Peregrines travel to Deerfield, Ill., next Wednesday for a CCAC Division II game against Trinity International University at 5:30 p.m. It’s the first game of a basketball doubleheader with the men who tip at 7:30 p.m.
