REC CENTER — Freshman guard Meme Harris (Merrillville) tipped the ball away at the top of the key from Titan Niki McDonald and then sped up court to finish with a layup knotting the game at 59-59 with 3:51 to play. But the Titans closed the game on a 13-2 run to seal the nonconference matchup between former Division I Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference foes.
The final score was not indicitive of how the teams battled for the first 36 minutes. And it was a different Peregrine performance on Thursday night than the 23-point loss last month in South Bend.
Freshman Chrissy Lobodinski (Merrillville) registered her best collegiate performance with her first double-double finishing with 21 points and 11 rebounds while swatting away three shots and swiping the ball twice. Lobodinski shot 60 percent from the field, was perfect at the charity stripe on three attempts and grabbed six offensive boards for the game-high 11 total.
Harris finished as the Peregrines second leading scorer with 16 points connecting on 53 percent of her shots. The point guard also had three assists in the loss.
Senior co-captain Linsey Smith (Lake Central) finished with eight points and seven rebounds. Sophomore Sara Keilman (Morton) pulled down nine rebounds, scored six points and had three shot blocks. Freshman Cortney Robinson (Hebron) also scored six points and grabbed four rebounds, had three assists and a pair of steals.
The Peregrines (5-18) shot 45 percent from the field, nine percent better than the Titans (14-7) and scored more points in the paint than the Titans, 42-34. But the Peregrines turned the ball over 22 times giving up 19 Titan points, while PUC only scored a dozen points off Titan turnovers.
The Peregrines host Trinity International University on Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. in the first game of a doubleheader with the men tipping at 3 p.m. One lucky fan will win a package deal for two that includes dinner, movie tickets and an overnight stay at an area hotel. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for ages 12-18 and free to children 11 and under and to PUC students with current school photo IDs.
