Peregrines go cold, Lady Trojans enjoy 72-46 road win

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008 - 10:53 pm

REC CENTER — Not one Peregrine could heat up from the field as the team shot a season-low 24 percent leading to a 72-46 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference loss to Trinity International University on Saturday.

In the first half, the Peregrines (5-18, 1-2 CCAC) could only connect on six shots from the field, including one 3-pointer, finishing with a 24 percent rate. The Peregrines scored 13 points from the field and eight from the free throw line and trailed 38-21 at the half.

The cold shooting performance continued for the Peregrines in the second half with the team hitting only 25 percent from the field, and they couldn’t hit a 3-pointer on four attempts. A season-high 29 turnovers also contributed to the conference loss.

Senior co-captain Linsey Smith (Lake Central) led the Peregrines with her second double-double of the season scoring 14 points and grabbing 11 rebounds. Freshman forward Chrissy “Lobo” Lobodinski (Merrillville), who has averaged 14.6 points in her last six games, finished with 10 points and seven rebounds.

Senior co-captain Shannon Dugan (Mother McAuley, Chicago) and freshman point guard Meme Harris (Merrillville) scored eight points and had three assists each. Sophomore forward Sara Keilman (Morton) grabbed a game-high 15 rebounds in the loss.

The Peregrines travel to Milwaukee in a doubleheader against Cardinal Stritch University with the men’s squad Wednesday. The women tip at 5 p.m. and the men at 7 p.m.

Mishawaka guard Stephaine Beck signs with Peregrines for 2008-09

Tuesday, January 29th, 2008 - 5:38 pm

HAMMOND, Ind. - Stephaine (pronounced Stephanie) Beck, a 5-7 senior guard at Mishawaka High School, will play for the Purdue University Calumet Peregrines next season signing with the university Monday night. Beck, a perimeter shooter, is averaging 17.2 points, 3.4 assists and 3.2 rebounds per game this season.

She’s earned All-State Honorable Mention three times and was named a Northern Indiana Second Team All-Conference player last season. Other honors include the team’s MVP, a three-time member of the Kris Kringle Klassic tournament team, a State Farm Insurance Athlete of the Month, a Kiwanis Club Athlete of the Month, and a Burger King Athlete of the Week.

Beck is currently the third all-time leading scorer for girls basketball at Mishawaka with 1,118 points. Academically, Beck is a National Scholar Athlete with a 3.4 GPA, and has earned the school’s Academic Principal’s Award.

Beck is the second recruit signed by women’s head coach Tom Megyesi for the 2008-09 season. Adding guards like Beck to the roster has been a point of recruitment for Megyesi.

“Stephaine is one of the top guards in Northern Indiana,” Megyesi said. “I’m certain that she will fit in well with our program and give us more scoring depth.”

Beck and Elkhart Memorial guard Nicci Desimone will join a backcourt tandem of Jamesha “Meme” Harris (Merrillville) and Jenny Britton (Lake Central). Harris is the second leading scorer on the Peregrines averaging 13.6 points per game. Britton averaged 11.8 points in 12 games before suffering a season-ending injury.

Titans slip past Peregrines in closing minutes, 72-61

Friday, January 25th, 2008 - 1:22 am

REC CENTER — Freshman guard Meme Harris (Merrillville) tipped the ball away at the top of the key from Titan Niki McDonald and then sped up court to finish with a layup knotting the game at 59-59 with 3:51 to play. But the Titans closed the game on a 13-2 run to seal the nonconference matchup between former Division I Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference foes.

The final score was not indicitive of how the teams battled for the first 36 minutes. And it was a different Peregrine performance on Thursday night than the 23-point loss last month in South Bend.

Freshman Chrissy Lobodinski (Merrillville) registered her best collegiate performance with her first double-double finishing with 21 points and 11 rebounds while swatting away three shots and swiping the ball twice. Lobodinski shot 60 percent from the field, was perfect at the charity stripe on three attempts and grabbed six offensive boards for the game-high 11 total.
