REC CENTER — Senior Linsey Smith nailed 50 percent of her 3-pointers, including a pair reminiscent of Cleveland Cavalier’s LeBron James in his Powerade commercials. Smith (Lake Central) canned two from 26-feet and led the Peregrines with 26 points, but it wasn’t enough as the University of Michigan-Dearborn knocked off the home team, 90-81, Friday afternoon.

Smith, who leads the Peregrines averaging 14 points per game, had 18 at the half and finished tied for game-high honors with UMD’s Katie Roberts.

Freshman Meme Harris (Merrillville) scored a season-high 24 points hitting 58 percent from the field. The point guard also dished out five assists and grabbed four rebounds.

The Peregrines (3-13) fell behind by 11 points midway through the first half. But in the closing 10 minutes of the half, the Peregrines clawed back into the contest knotting the score at 49 as the defense forced the Wolves (7-3) into a dozen turnovers.

The Wolves kept a four, five or six-point lead in most of the second half until senior co-captain Shannon Dugan split a pair of free throws to pull the Peregrines to 81-78 with 2:27 in regulation. But the offense cooled and the Wolves finished with a 9-3 run to close out the contest.

Dugan (Mother McAuley, Ill.) led the team with 10 rebounds, and she scored seven points and had three assists. Freshman Chrissy Lobodinski (Merrillville) doubled her season scoring average and finished with 15 points and a shot block. Freshman Cortney Robinson (Hebron) added nine points, nine rebounds, a pair of assists and a shot block.

The Peregrines next action is Thursday, Jan. 3 at 7 p.m. in the Fitness & Recreation Center to face nationally ranked St. Xavier. Get Fit is the promotional theme with contestants earning a one-day pass to the university’s fitness center.
