Five Lady Titans score double digit, beat Peregrines

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Neither team shot the ball particularly well from the field in Saturday’s contest, but the Lady Titans used an offensive advantage in free throws and 3-point shooting to beat the Peregrines 76-53 in the nonconference affair.

The Lady Titans (8-5)  were perfect from the charity stripe for 19 points and connected on seven 3-pointers, five more than the Peregrines (3-11), for a 21-point difference. The Peregrines tightened defensively in the second half and allowed only 28 points. But a 48-29 halftime deficit was too much for the Peregrines to overcome.

IUSB’s Eva Comans, a junior transfer from Valparaiso University, led all scorers with 20. Four other Lady Titans scored double digits, while senior Jen VanderZanden (Lake Central) led all rebounders with 18.

Peregrine point guard Meme Harris (Merrillville) led her team with 16 points and three assists. Senior co-captain Linsey Smith (Lake Central) connected for 13 points, including 7-of-8 from the foul line, and had four steals. Junior LaKeisha Hurst (Dover, Del.) finished with nine points, grabbed nine rebounds and led the team with five swipes.

The injury bug bit the Peregrines for the third time this year with a season-ending injury. Center Rhiannon Howard (Lourdes, Ill.) had five rebounds, a shot block and one steal in 14 minutes of action before leaving with a knee injury. Earlier in the season, guards Heidi Freund (Hebron) and Jenny Britton (Lake Central) were also sidelined with knee injuries.

The Peregrines host the University of Michigan-Dearborn (6-3) Friday in a 2 p.m. start. Last Minute Shopping is the promotional theme with contestants earning a shot at holiday prizes.
