Friday, December 21st, 2007 - 6:31 pm

REC CENTER — Senior Linsey Smith nailed 50 percent of her 3-pointers, including a pair reminiscent of Cleveland Cavalier’s LeBron James in his Powerade commercials. Smith (Lake Central) canned two from 26-feet and led the Peregrines with 26 points, but it wasn’t enough as the University of Michigan-Dearborn knocked off the home team, 90-81, Friday afternoon.

Smith, who leads the Peregrines averaging 14 points per game, had 18 at the half and finished tied for game-high honors with UMD’s Katie Roberts.

Freshman Meme Harris (Merrillville) scored a season-high 24 points hitting 58 percent from the field. The point guard also dished out five assists and grabbed four rebounds.

Scarlet Hawks edge Peregrines, 60-54

Friday, December 21st, 2007 - 5:57 pm

CHICAGO — Charity was not kind to the Peregrines in Thursday’s non-division loss to the Scarlet Hawks. The Peregrines made 22 trips to the free throw line, but could only drop 13 through the rim, a 59 percent rate and nearly 10 percentage points off their season average.

From the field in the first half, the Peregrines had trouble hitting only 26 percent, including 1-of-7 from the 3-point stripe. Purdue University Calumet trailed by only three points at the break.

In the second half, the Peregrines shooting hands warmed to the Keating Center rims as they improved in all three categories; 52 percent from the field, 50 percent from the 3-point stripe and 71 percent from the foul line.

Freshman point guard Meme Harris (Merrillville) led the Peregrines with 14 points and three assists. Senior co-captain Linsey Smith (Lake Central) was one point shy of her season average scoring 13, and she tied for the team high nine rebounds. Freshman Chrissy Lobodinski (Merrillville) grabbed nine rebounds and scored 11 points. Junior forward LaKeisha Hurst (Dover, Del.) added eight points and five rebounds before fouling out of the contest.

Wednesday, December 19th, 2007 - 6:28 pm

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Neither team shot the ball particularly well from the field in Saturday’s contest, but the Lady Titans used an offensive advantage in free throws and 3-point shooting to beat the Peregrines 76-53 in the nonconference affair.

The Lady Titans (8-5)  were perfect from the charity stripe for 19 points and connected on seven 3-pointers, five more than the Peregrines (3-11), for a 21-point difference. The Peregrines tightened defensively in the second half and allowed only 28 points. But a 48-29 halftime deficit was too much for the Peregrines to overcome.

IUSB’s Eva Comans, a junior transfer from Valparaiso University, led all scorers with 20. Four other Lady Titans scored double digits, while senior Jen VanderZanden (Lake Central) led all rebounders with 18.

Peregrine point guard Meme Harris (Merrillville) led her team with 16 points and three assists. Senior co-captain Linsey Smith (Lake Central) connected for 13 points, including 7-of-8 from the foul line, and had four steals. Golden Eagles shoot 51 percent, beat Peregrines

Saturday, December 8th, 2007 - 12:20 am

REC CENTER — In the first half, the Golden Eagles blistered the nets hitting 62 percent from the field and led by 18 at the half. Cornerstone University cooled in the second half and finished shooting 51 percent for the game in a 76-49 win over the host Peregrines.

Cornerstone (9-2) opened with a 7-0 run, but the Peregrines clawed back during the next seven minutes and closed the gap to 15-13 after 6-5 center Rhiannon Howard (Lourdes) dropped in a 2-footer from the paint. But the Peregrine offense sputtered in the remaining minutes of the first half, while the Golden Eagles went on a 31-15 run closing out the opening period.

In the second half, Cornerstone continued to show its offensive muscle extending its lead to 25 points in the first four minutes of action. The deficit grew to 32 points for the Peregrines who just couldn’t find the answer defensively and couldn’t unlock the lid on the basket on the offensive end of the court.

Senior co-captain Linsey Smith (Lake Central) led the Peregrines (3-9) with 17 points. Smith leads the team in scoring averaging 13.5 points per game.
