REC CENTER — Goshen College got on the board first when Kimmie Hummer made one of two free throws, and 20 seconds later Cassie Greives connected on a field goal for a 3-2 lead. But it would be the Maple Leafs last lead.
Freshman Jenny Britton (Lake Central) drilled a 3-pointer from the corner giving the Peregrines (3-6) the lead for good. On the team’s next possession Britton splashed in her second 3-pointer of the night and she never stopped hitting from the three-point line all night.
Britton was 7-of-8 from deep and 10-of-12 overall leading all scorers with 29 points and led the Peregrines to a 98-66 nonconference win over Goshen College. The 5-4 guard was perfect at the free throw line and had two assists to celebrate her collegiate best to date.
“She had a spectacular game,” Head Coach Tom Megyesi said. “She’s just an outstanding shooter and our fans got to appreciate that fact tonight.”
Britton wasn’t the only player celebrating a collegiate best. Freshman point guard Meme Harris (Merrillville) hit a pair of 3-pointers of her own and was 9-of-16 from the field for 22 points. Harris dished out a season-high 10 assists and had a pair of steals rounding out her night.
Sophomore Sara Keilman (Morton) also cashed in for her best collegiate game finishing with 15 points and a career-high 10 rebounds in a starting role. Freshman Chrissy Lobodinski (Merrillville) scored 10 points and senior co-captain Linsey Smith (Lake Central) finished with 11 points and five rebounds.
The night started honoring Smith for scoring her 1,000 career point. She was presented with a souvenir ball acknowledging the record. Smith is the 11th woman in PUC’s 26-year basketball history to score 1,000 points in a career. She entered the contest with 1,018 officially.
The Peregrines were in control the entire night and led in every statistical category. On defense, the Peregrines forced 23 turnovers for 28 points. Offensively they shot 53 percent overall and 58 percent from 3-point range. They outrebounded their opponent 42-36, had a season-high 24 team assists and 10 steals.
The Peregrines travel Saturday to Michigan for a 1 p.m. game against Siena Heights University. Next Wednesday they head to Joliet for a 7:30 p.m. tip against the University of St. Francis. Friday, Dec. 7, the Peregrines return home to face Cornerstone University, Ind. for a 6 p.m. tip.
