CHICAGO — It’s no secret that Saint Xavier University has one of the best offenses in the country among National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics squads. But no opponent could have expected the 3-point shelling the Peregrines suffered.
The Cougars hit 13-of-16 three-point shots (81 percent) in the opening half and finished with 17-of-23 for the game in the lopsided win. The 138 points was a single-game record for the unbeaten Cougars.
Saint Xaiver had seven players score double digits, including Angie Bush (Morgan Township) who led all scorers with 23.
The Peregrines (1-4) trailed 78-31 at the intermission, but didn’t quit. Freshman guard Jenny Britton (Lake Central) led the Peregrines with 18 points, including four 3-pointers and a 4-of-5 performance from the foul line. She also had a pair of steals in the loss.
Junior forward LaKeisha Hurst (Dover, Del.) registered 16 points while grabbing seven rebounds. Senior guard and co-captain Linsey Smith (Lake Central) scored nine points, had four rebounds, two assists and a steal.
Senior guard and co-captain Shannon Dugan (Mother McAuley) finished as the team’s leading rebounder with eight, and she scored six points and had three assists. Freshman forward Chrissy Lobodinski (Merrillville) also scored six points, including a perfect 4-of-4 from the charity stripe and she grabbed five rebounds before fouling out.
The Peregrines face preseason Division II No. 4-ranked Bethel College, Ind., Tuesday in a double-header with the men’s team in Mishawaka. The women tip at 6 p.m.
