Peregrines cruise behind Britton’s 29 points

Friday, November 30th, 2007 - 9:36 pm

REC CENTER — Goshen College got on the board first when Kimmie Hummer made one of two free throws, and 20 seconds later Cassie Greives connected on a field goal for a 3-2 lead. But it would be the Maple Leafs last lead.

Freshman Jenny Britton (Lake Central) drilled a 3-pointer from the corner giving the Peregrines (3-6) the lead for good. On the team’s next possession Britton splashed in her second 3-pointer of the night and she never stopped hitting from the three-point line all night.

Britton was 7-of-8 from deep and 10-of-12 overall leading all scorers with 29 points and led the Peregrines to a 98-66 nonconference win over Goshen College. The 5-4 guard was perfect at the free throw line and had two assists to celebrate her collegiate best to date.

“She had a spectacular game,” Head Coach Tom Megyesi said. “She’s just an outstanding shooter and our fans got to appreciate that fact tonight.”

Peregrines win nail-biter, end six-game skid

Sunday, November 25th, 2007 - 11:44 pm

CLINTON, Iowa — How important is it to make foul shots, especially late in the game? Ask Peregrine freshman guard Meme Harris. Harris hit a pair of free throws with 17 seconds to play giving her squad a comfortable 77-71 lead.

But Ashford University scored the next five points, including a 3-pointer at the buzzer giving PUC a slim 77-76 win in the second day of action at the Ashford Tourney. The win earned the Peregrines (2-6) a split on the weekend and ended a six-game losing streak.

Harris (Merrillville) was perfect from the foul line during the contest and finished with 15 points, second best for her team. Harris also had six assists and a pair of steals in the win.

Seconds after Harris hit the game-winning free throw she was whistled for a foul sending Ashford University’s Lauren Fairbert to the line. Fairbert hit a pair cutting the lead to 77-73. Fairbert then stole the ball on PUC’s next possession. After a Saints miss and offensive rebound, Kayla Crist drilled a 3-pointer as time expired.

Tuesday, November 20th, 2007 - 9:38 pm

MISHAWAKA, Ind. — For 20 minutes the Peregrines hung with Division II No. 6-ranked Bethel College and were locked at half, 27-27. But in the second half, the unbeaten Lady Pilots warmed to their opening night fans hitting 51 percent from the field leading to a 76-51 win.

In the opening half, the Peregrines (1-5) went on a 13-4 run moving out to a 25-16 lead with under six minutes remaining. But Bethel knotted the score at 25 with a 9-0 run just before the half.

Lady Pilot Head Coach Jody Martinez said his squad was sluggish and distracted in the first half with the Thanksgiving break taking center stage. He got their attention as they opened the second half with a 22-6 run.

Freshman point guard Meme Harris (Merrillville) led the Peregrines with 16 points in 33 minutes of action. Junior LaKeisha Hurst (Dover, Del.) and sophomore Sara Keilman (Morton) each scored 10 points.
