Trinity International Trojans sneak past Lady Peregrines late, 50-44

REC CENTER. – Sophomore forward LaKeisha Hurst (Dover, Del.) scored a career high 16 points, including 10 in the second half, but it wasn’t enough for a Lady Peregrine victory. Hurst hit one of two free throws with 1:38 to play and pulled her squad to 46-44, which turned out to be the final points of the night for the Lady Peregrines (4-14) who dropped the nonconference game to the Lady Trojans (9-13).The Lady Peregrines trailed 28-22 at halftime, but made up ground in the first nine minutes of the second half taking a 36-32 lead with 11:23 to play. Hurst connected on a five-foot jumper to keep the Lady Peregrines ahead. But during the next five minutes, the PUC offense went cold and scored only three points. With 6:22 left in the second half, the Lady Trojans led 44-39.

Hurst finished the game as the leading scorer and rebounder for both squads. She was 7-of-11, 63 percent, from the field and grabbed 11 rebounds in the loss. Senior co-captain Jessica Hamman (Highland) was the second leading scorer for the Lady Peregrines finishing with 11 points and seven rebounds. Junior forward Linsey Smith (Lake Central) scored seven points, grabbed six rebounds, had two assists and two steals. Junior co-captain Shannon Dugan (Mother McAuley) chipped in six points while grabbing five rebounds.

After an offensive performance of shooting 44 and 50 percent from the field last Tuesday against Olivet Nazarene University, the Lady Peregrine offense struggled in both halves against TIU. They shot an identical 33 percent from the field in both halves against the Lady Trojans. The Lady Peregrines won the battle on the boards finishing with 44 total rebounds, nine above their season per game average.

The Lady Peregrines host Illinois Institute of Technology at 7 p.m. on Saturday, the 2006-07 Purdue University Calumet Homecoming. Former PUC athlete Lee Ann DeYoung will have her playing days jersey retired. DeYoung was a three-time Kodak All-American player from 1986-88 while playing for the then Lady Lakers.
