Lady Titans win second CCAC contest, keep Lady Peregrines winless

SOUTH BEND, Ind. – The offense came in spurts in the opening 12 minutes of the second half as the Lady Peregrines drew to within eight points of Indiana University South Bend. But the Lady Titans withstood the 10-minute surge and then put their own offense on display leading to a 63-34 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference win at the hands of the Lady Peregrines (4-13 overall, 0-3 CCAC).Neither team registered impressive shooting percentages from the field, but the Lady Titans (6-15, 2-2) hit their shots at critical times. And when they couldn’t find an open outside shot, IUSB pushed the ball inside drawing contact for free throws, or simply scored. The Lady Titans scored 13 more times at the charity stripe than the Lady Peregrines and 10 more points in the paint than the Lady Peregrines.

Senior co-captain Jessica Hamman (Highland) hit 50 percent of her shots for 11 points to lead the Lady Peregrines. She also had five rebounds in the loss. Junior Linsey Smith (Lake Central) was three points off her season average scoring seven points on a pair of 3-pointers, and she grabbed four rebounds. LaKeisha Hurst (Dover, Del.) getting her second start of the conference season, finished with six points, seven rebounds and one steal.

Three starters for the Lady Titans combined for 48 points. Jennifer VanderZanden (Lake Central) led all scorers with 18 points, 13 from the charity stripe. The junior also grabbed 14 rebounds, seven offensively and defensively.

Purdue University Calumet travels to Bourbonnais on Tuesday to face CCAC rival Olivet Nazarene, the conference standings leader, at 5:30 p.m.
