MILWAUKEE, Wisc. — Peregrine freshman Joey Elabed (Morton) drilled a 3-pointer at the buzzer to close a valiant effort by the underdogs, but it was one-point short of sending the game to overtime. Third-seeded Cardinal Stritch University survived an opening round upset in a 74-73 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference playoff victory.

With 46 seconds left, sophomore guard Antonio McNeal (Gavit) penetrated the lane and found junior forward Charles Cruz (Gavit) alone at the 3-point stripe and flipped the ball to Cruz who splashed in a 3-pointer giving the Peregines a 70-69 lead.

After a Wolves timeout, Spencer Peck hit a 3-pointer giving the home team a 72-70 lead with 22 seconds to play. The Peregrines called a timeout to setup a final shot that missed with nine seconds left. Stritch’s Chad Dekker grabbed the rebound and passed to teammate Stephen Sorensen who hit a 12-foot jumper for the winning basket with four seconds left setting up Elabed’s final shot.

A pair of Peregrines finished with game-high scoring honors with 15 points. Cruz hit 53 percent from the field, grabbed five rebounds and had two steals, while freshman Justin Latimore (Indianapolis North Central) hit 55 percent of his shots from the field, grabbed five rebounds and had three assists in the loss.

Freshman Michael Patton (West Side) grabbed a game-high 10 rebounds, scored 13 points and had the team’s only two shot blocks. McNeal scored 11 points, including 7-of-9 from the charity stripe, and had three assists and two steals.

The Peregrines trailed 39-24 at the half allowing the Wolves to hit 57 percent of their shots from the field contributing to the 15-point deficit. But in the second half, the Peregrines were 15-of-29 from the field, including five 3-pointers, leading to a 49-point half.

Chipping in to the 15-point deficit, the Peregrines tied the game at 67-67 when Cruz hit a jumper with 1:20 to play. Cruz later gave the Peregrines their only lead of the second half on his 3-pointer with under one minute left.

The Peregrines forced eight turnovers in the second half scoring 23 points helping to close the gap. They shot 51 percent from the field, 50 from the 3-point arc and 73 percent from the foul line in the second 20 minutes.

DEERFIELD, Ill. — Closing games has been a season-long struggle with a young Peregrine squad, and Wednesday night’s game was another frustrating finish. Trinity International University, who beat the Peregrines in overtime last month at the PUC Recreation Athletic Center, swept the season series overcoming a 17-point deficit with a 69-63 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference victory.

The Peregrines (6-21, 4-7 CCAC) opened the game on a 9-2 run and stretched the lead to a commanding 39-22 at halftime. But the offense struggled in the second half scoring 13 points in 13-minutes of action.

The Trojans (7-21, 3-8) continued to close the gap and grabbed their first lead of the game, 53-52, with under seven minutes to play in regulation. Both teams traded leads in the final minutes, and the Trojans pushed their lead to 67-63 with 28 seconds left.

Peregrine junior guard Kris Krstevski (Lake Central) attempted a 3-pointer that rattled out with 15 seconds left. The Trojans grabbed the rebound off the miss and avoided the Peregrine defense until a foul was called with less than four seconds to play. A pair of made free throws finished the scoring.

Junior co-captain Kevin Thomas (Highland) finished with a double-double to lead the Peregrines with 18 points and 10 rebounds. Freshman guard Michael Patton (West Side) shot 85 percent from the field and finished with 13 points and led the team with seven rebounds.

Freshman Justin Latimore (Indianapolis North Central) finished with 11 points, six rebounds, three assists, a pair of steals and the team’s only shot block. Junior forward Charles Cruz (Gavit) had eight points in the loss.

The Peregrines had the edge from the field hitting 48 percent compared to 42 percent for the Trojans, and outrebounded their opponents 30-25.

PUC closes out the regular season at 3 p.m. Saturday in the second game of a CCAC doubleheader with Cardinal Stritch University. The women play at 1 p.m. Fans will be treated to freebies during Fan Appreciation Day game promotions.

Junior forward Charles Cruz (Gavit) finished with a dozen points, four rebounds and led the team with six assists. Freshman Justin Latimore (Indianapolis North Central) scored 11 and had six rebounds. Freshman Michael Patton (West Side) had a game-high nine rebounds, scored eight and dished out three assists in the win.

Unlike last month’s game between the two local Purdue basketball squads, which was tight until the closing minutes, Saturday’s game was never in doubt for PUC (6-20, 4-6 CCAC). Last month, the Peregrines trailed by two at the half before coming back to win. Saturday, the Peregrines enjoyed a 15-point lead at the break.

As a team, the Peregrines outshot the Panthers 47 percent to 33 percent from the field, including a 41 percent success rate compared to 20 percent from the 3-point stripe. The Peregrines also outrebounded the Panthers 34-27.

Purdue University Calumet travels to Deerfield, Ill., this Wednesday in the second game of a CCAC doubleheader with Trinity International University. The women tip at 5 p.m. and the men at 7 p.m. The Trojans defeated the Peregrines, 84-76, in overtime last month in PUC’s Fitness & Recreation Center.
