RedHawks edge Peregrines in OT, 103-100, split season series

REC CENTER — Peregrine guard Robert Williams jacked-up a 12-foot jumper that splashed through the net as the buzzer sounded in regulation to tie the game, 90-90, and the home crowd roared. But a little more than five minutes later, at the end of overtime, the RedHawks sent the Peregrine faithful home with a 103-100 nonconference loss, and payback after PUC beat IUN in overtime last month, 89-85, at the Savannah Center in Gary.

With a one-point lead and seven seconds remaining in overtime, RedHawk Jesse Howell was fouled by Williams. Howell hit both free throws giving his team a 3-point advantage. The Peregrines pushed the ball up the court, but never got a clean look at the basket as senior Vince Johnson tried to connect on a jumper that missed as the horn sounded.

Antonio HurtThe Peregrines (2-10) were paced by sophomores Antonio Hurt (Michigan City) and Michael Patton (Gary West Side). The pair combined for 61 points hitting 72 percent from the field.

Hurt had a career high 33 points shooting 71 percent from the field, including a perfect 2-for-2 from the 3-point stripe. Hurt, the team’s leading scorer averaging 11.9 per game, also had seven rebounds in the loss.

Patton, a 2007-08 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Honorable Mention, scored 28 points, was 4-of-7 (57 percent) from the 3-point stripe, tied for team-high rebounding honors with eight, dished out five assists and had a pair of shot blocks.

Senior Kris Krstevski rounded out the Peregrines in double figures, scoring 16 points, including three from the 3-point stripe. Johnson (Bishop Noll) scored eight points and grabbed eight rebounds, and Williams (Gary West Side) led the team with a season-high 10 assists and scored seven points.

The Peregrines had a season-high 25 assists on 42 attempts, a 59 percent success rate.

Pete Trgovich III (Munster) led IUN (6-9) with 38 points, including an 8-for-12 (66 percent) performance from the 3-point stripe. Howell finished with 31 points and 13 rebounds, while Pete Dunbar (Lake Central) scored 18 and had seven rebounds.

The game produced 10 ties, five for each squad. PUC shot 48 percent from the floor compared to IUN’s 42 percent, and the Peregrines outrebounded the RedHawks 44-31.
