Peregrines defense, board dominance lead to 53-47 win

REC CENTER — Ahead by six at the half, the Peregrines tightened the screws on defense limiting Taylor University to only a dozen points in 15-plus minutes of action in the second half. PUC also owned the rebounding edge nearly doubling the Trojans output en route to a 53-47 win at home.

Taylor University (6-8) struggled from the field (41 percent) in the second half including a 2-for-12 effort from the 3-point stripe, and only closed the scoring gap with 3:51 to play. The Trojans cut the lead to 47-42 with 1:25 left in regulation, but the Peregrines (2-8) clamped down defensively holding the Trojans to a 2-for-5 performance in the closing seconds of the game.

Antonio HurtPeregrine sophomore Antonio Hurt (Michigan City) led his team, for the second consecutive game, with 15 points shooting 54 percent from the floor, including a perfect night from the 3-point stripe. Hurt leads the Peregrines averaging 11.9 points per game.

Senior Kris Krstevski (Lake Central), the team’s fourth leading scorer, hit 60 percent from the 3-point stripe and finished with 11 points, six rebounds and a pair of assists.

Sophomore Michael Patton (Gary West Side), who leads the Peregrines averaging 7.7 rebounds per game, and has been the leading rebounder in 5-of-10 games, grabbed a game-high 12 boards, scored five and had four assists in the win.

The Peregrines had a season-high 12 assists on 19 successful attempts from the field with seven-of-nine players contributing to the total. They outrebounded Taylor 43-26 overall and had a 24-11 edge at the intermission. The Trojans were held under 50 points for only the third time this season.

The game was delayed for 45 minutes as the team from Upland, Ind. crept through the snowstorm that snarled traffic throughout northwest Indiana during rush hour and the holiday shopping season.
