GARY, Ind. — Sophomore guard Michael Patton (Gary West Side) splashed in a 3-pointer as the buzzer sounded sending the game into overtime. And five minutes later, Patton scored the winning basket as the Peregrines grabbed their first win of the season, 89-85, against backyard rival Indiana University Northwest.
Patton, the team’s leading scorer with 10.8 per game, and the team’s leading 3-point shooter, was 3-of-5 (60 percent) from the 3-point stripe and finished with the team-high 18 points. A Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Honorable Mention player last season, Patton finished with seven rebounds, six assists and a team-high three steals in the nonconference win.
The Peregrines (1-5) had a 41-28 lead at the half hitting 53 percent from the field and 50 percent from the 3-point stripe. But the undermanned Peregrines, dressing only eight players, were gassed in the second half allowing the Redhawks (2-7) to register 45 points, which called for late game heroics, delivered by Patton, extending the game to overtime.
For the first time this season, the Peregrines had five players finish in double figures, led by Patton. Senior Vince Johnson (Bishop Noll), averaging 9.5 points per game, scored 17 and grabbed eight rebounds.
Sophomore Antonio Hurt (Michigan City) shot 46 percent from the field and finished with 15 points and seven rebounds. Jarrid Bradley (Maconaquah), Don Davenport (Indianapolis Northwest) and Kris Krstevski (Lake Central) each scored 10 points in the win. Davenport grabbed a team-high 11 rebounds and had three assists, and Bradley and Krstevski each pulled down eight rebounds.
IUN’s Pete Trgovich III (Andrean) was the game’s leading scorer with 25 and Pete Dunbar (Lake Central) finished with 20.
The Peregrines travel to Chicago, Dec. 3, to face St. Xavier University in a nonconference tip at 7 p.m.
