Patton sends Peregrines to OT, scores winning basket in extra period

GARY, Ind. — Sophomore guard Michael Patton (Gary West Side) splashed in a 3-pointer as the buzzer sounded sending the game into overtime. And five minutes later, Patton scored the winning basket as the Peregrines grabbed their first win of the season, 89-85, against backyard rival Indiana University Northwest.

Patton, the team’s leading scorer with 10.8 per game, and the team’s leading 3-point shooter, was 3-of-5 (60 percent) from the 3-point stripe and finished with the team-high 18 points. A Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Honorable Mention player last season, Patton finished with seven rebounds, six assists and a team-high three steals in the nonconference win.

Michael PattonThe Peregrines (1-5) had a 41-28 lead at the half hitting 53 percent from the field and 50 percent from the 3-point stripe. But the undermanned Peregrines, dressing only eight players, were gassed in the second half allowing the Redhawks (2-7) to register 45 points, which called for late game heroics, delivered by Patton, extending the game to overtime.

For the first time this season, the Peregrines had five players finish in double figures, led by Patton. Senior Vince Johnson (Bishop Noll), averaging 9.5 points per game, scored 17 and grabbed eight rebounds.

Two different halves contribute to Peregrine home loss, 65-43

REC CENTER — For the first 20 minutes of action, the Peregrines forced Lindsey Wilson College into 11 turnovers defensively and hit nearly 43 percent from the field on the offensive end of the court. And when they left the court at the half, the Peregrines trailed by a mere basket, 29-27.

But in the second half, the undermanned Peregrines simply ran out of gas with 11:20 to play and the Blue Raiders (5-1) took advantage leading to a 65-43 win.

Don Davenport led the Peregrines in scoring.In the last seven minutes of action, the Peregrines, who only scored 16 points in the second half, missed seven shots and commited four turnovers contributing to the loss. And the Blue Raiders were hitting 40 percent of their shots from six different players. 

“We were tired and it showed up when we were shooting short shots late in the game,” head coach Dan Voudrie said. “Our guys are better shooters, but they (Blue Raiders) had a bigger lineup and a deeper bench and it wore on our rebounders and shooters.”

The Peregrines (0-5) were led in scoring by sophomore forward Don Davenport (Indianapolis Northwest) who finished with nine points (4-of-8) four rebounds and three steals. Guard Robert Williams (West Side) hit 40 percent of his shots for eight points. Antonio Hurt (Michigan City) scored seven, and Michael Patton (West Side) added six points, four assists and led the team with seven rebounds.

No. 2 Bethel College flexes its offense in 116-65 win over Peregrines

REC CENTER — Bethel College showed the Peregrine faithful why the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics places the Pilot squad from Mishawaka so high in the rankings; they are very talented. The Peregrines kept the came close for the opening eight mintes, including a 12-12 tie with 12:02 until the half.

But the unbeaten Pilots widened the gap on a 15-2 run during the next three minutes and never allowed the Peregrines closer. The Pilots shot 55 percent in the first half and headed into the locker room with a 53-26 advantage.

Kris KrstevskiPUC’s offense came out of the locker room with a little fire scoring seven points in the first three minutes, including a 3-pointer by team leading scorer Kris Krstevski (Lake Central) who finished with 15 points, nine from the 3-point stripe. But again the Pilots amped up their offense and held a 41-point lead with 12-plus minutes to play. 

The Pilots have scored 100 points or more in four of their first six games, a 112 points per game average. Six players scored in double figures for the Pilots.

The Peregrines finished with four in double figures, including Krstevski. Sophomores Michael Patton (West Side) and Don Davenport (Indianapolis Northwest) each scored 11 points. Patton also had six rebounds, six assists, four steals and three shot blocks. Antonio Hurt (Michigan City) also cracked double digits adding 10 points and six rebounds to the final totals.

PUC hosts Lindsey Wilson College, Kent., this Saturday at 3 p.m. Tickets are $5 for adults, $3 for ages 12-18, and free to children 11 and under and PUC students with a current university ID.

Shooting woes hamper Peregrines in first half, lead to 84-61 home loss

REC CENTER — Jump shots were off, layups wouldn’t drop, and even the crowd seemed a little off its game. All the misses contributed to a 25 percent shooting performance from the Peregrines in the first half, while the Fighting Saints singed the nets hitting 60 percent, including six from the 3-point stripe and leading to an 84-61 nonconference loss.

Both offenses struggled through the first 10 minutes until Saints guard Derek Ciezczak hit a 3-pointer that opened the University of Saint Francis (2-1) lead to 18-6. USF’s offense heated up for the rest of the first half outscoring the Peregrines 24-14 heading into halftime with a 42-20 lead.

The Peregrines (0-3) shot selection improved in the second half hitting 57 percent, including a pair of 3-pointers. But the deficit from the first 20 minutes was too great for a comeback.Vince Johnson

Senior Vince Johnson (Bishop Noll) led the Peregrines with 19 points, five rebounds and a pair of shot blocks. Johnson is averaging 12 points per game in the first three contests.

Sophomore Michael Patton (West Side) had the hottest hand hitting 71 percent for 15 points, which included two 3-pointers.  Patton also had six rebounds, three steals and two shot blocks.

Sophomore Justin Latimore (Indianapolis North Central) finished with 11 points and four rebounds.

Purdue University Calumet’s men’s and women’s basketball teams host Bethel College in an evening doubleheader Nov. 18. The women tip at 5 p.m. and the men approximately at 7 p.m.

Peregrines lose nonconference road opener to Titans, 85-68

SOUTH BEND, Ind. — Two Peregrines scored double digits in the nonconference game Wednesday night, but it wasn’t enough offense against a Titan trio who scored a combined 55 points leading their team to an 85-68 win. IU South Bend senior Tyler Leighton and sophomore Ben Werner scored 20 each and sophomore Dan Kunde added 15 points leading all scorers.

Peregrine sophomore Justin Latimore (Indianapolis North Central) led his squad with 15 points shooting 75 percent from the field, including a pair of 3-pointers.  Latimore also grabbed four rebounds in the loss.

Don DavenportAlso scoring double digits was sophomore Don Davenport (Indianapolis Northwest) who finished with 11 points hitting 80 percent of his shots, including a 3-pointer. Michael Patton (Gary West Side) added nine points and led the Peregrines (0-2) with nine rebounds.

Both teams shot nearly identical numbers from the field and free throw lines keeping the game close statistically. PUC shot 46 percent from the field and hit 58 percent of its free throws, while IUSB (2-0) hit 47 and 55, respectively. But the Titans cashed in offensively on 22 Peregrine turnovers.

Purdue University Calumet hosts the University Saint Francis, Ill., this Saturday at 3 p.m.
