Trinity Christian takes advantage of PUC turnovers

Saturday, January 12th, 2008 - 5:54 pm

PALOS HEIGHTS, Ill. — Miscues hurt the young Peregrine squad to the tune of 21 points for the Trolls. Although the Peregrines limited their turnovers to 16 for the game, the timeliness of the mistakes was costly in the 79-59 loss Saturday in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Division II opener for Purdue University Calumet (2-15, 0-1 CCAC).

Twelve minutes into the second half, Peregrine freshman forward Antonio Hurt (Michigan City) nailed a 3-pointer to bring his squad within eight. But on its next five possessions, PUC missed eight shots and gave the ball away three times that turned into a 14-point Troll (10-8, 2-0) lead that they never relinquished.

Junior Charles Cruz (Gavit), who leads the Peregrines averaging 15.4 points per game, led them with 16 points on 63 percent shooting. He also grabbed six rebounds and had three assists.

Freshman guard Michael Patton (West Side), who was moved into the starting rotation, connected for 14 points on 55 percent shooting from the field, including 3-of-4 from the 3-point stripe. Patton finished with seven rebounds, two assists and a shot block and steal in the loss. Off the bench, Hurt scored nine points and grabbed five rebounds.

PUC travels to Elgin, Ill., to face Judson College on Wednesday in the second game of a conference doubleheader. The women’s teams play at 5:30 p.m. and the men tip at approximately 7:30 p.m.

Cougars 3-pointer beats Peregrines in final second

Thursday, January 10th, 2008 - 12:34 am

REC CENTER — Saint Xavier University’s Paris Davis shot one 3-point basket in the entire game for the Cougars. And he waited until there was less than a second to play in the game to drain the 18-footer sealing a 67-64 win for the visiting team.

Peregrine center Kevin Thomas (Highland) tied the game at 64-64 on a two-footer off the glass when freshman Michael Patton (West Side) slipped the big man a pass inside with six seconds to play. The Cougars (15-4) raced the ball up the court, and with the final seconds ticking off, point guard Alok Aijar penetrated to the free throw line and then kicked it out to Davis for the 3-pointer.

With 0.9 tenths of a second remaining, Peregrine guard Antonio McNeal (Morton) heaved the ball toward the basket, but it fell short in the final shot of the game.

IU Southeast turns up the defense, spoils Peregrines chances

Saturday, January 5th, 2008 - 5:26 pm

REC CENTER — Indiana University Southeast forced the tempo of the game most of the second half, including a pair of steals while the Peregrines were inbounding the ball. The costly PUC errors in the final minutes of action also cost the Peregrines on the scoreboard in an 80-69 loss in nonconference action Saturday.

The Peregrines (2-13) trailed early in the second half by 15. During a 10-minute span, the host team kept slicing into the deficit and eventually cut the lead to three when forward Charles Cruz (Gavit) connected for two of his game-high 17 points.  But that was as close as the Peregrines would come to the Grenadiers (10-7) for the remainder of the contest.

Cruz, a 6-5 junior, battled for most of his points against a pair of IUSE players measuring 6-8 and 6-9. Cruz tied three other players for game-high honors with seven rebounds.

Ice cold 3-point shooting pins Peregrines with home loss

Wednesday, January 2nd, 2008 - 10:05 pm

REC CENTER — After taking a 30-25 halftime lead to the locker room, the Peregrines struggled from the floor, especially from the 3-point line in the second 20 minutes. The team shot only 4-of-15 (26 percent) from deep in the second half en route to a 65-53 loss in front of the home crowd.

With 9:27 left in regulation and trailing, 44-43, the Indiana University South Bend Titans hit a pair of 3-pointers and a pair of field goals in a span of 95 seconds taking a nine-point lead that they never relinquished. While the Titans (11-7) couldn’t miss a shot, the Peregrines (2-12) couldn’t find the bottom of their net missing three consecutive attempts and turning the ball over twice.

Junior Charles Cruz (Gavit) finished with game-high honors scoring 22 points, his season high. Cruz also grabbed six rebounds in the loss. Freshman Josh Collins (MacArthur, San Antonio, Tex.) knocked in 13 points, including three 3-pointers. Point guard Delriko Curtis (Benton Harbor, Mich.) dished out six assists and led the team with nine rebounds.

PUC was 6-of-21 for the game from the 3-point stripe and also suffered from the field overall hitting 9-of-27 (33 percent) in the second half.  IUSB shot 51 percent from the field in the second half, including 3-of-4 from the 3-point stripe.

PUC hosts Indiana University Southeast (8-7) Saturday beginning at 1 p.m. Fans can win prizes during contests of the “It’s Your Lucky Day” game promotion.
