Peregrine shooting hits season low in 65-42 road loss

Thursday, January 31st, 2008 - 4:28 pm

MILWAUKEE, Wisc. — Road victories have been rare this season as the Peregrines rebuild, and Wednesday’s Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Division II game was another rarity for the squad.

The Peregrines were as cold as the outdoor temperatures on offense hitting 17 percent of their shots in the first half and finished with a season-low 23 percent for the game in the 65-42 loss at Cardinal Stritch University. It was the first time this season the Peregrines scored less than 50 points in a game.

Not one PUC player hit a hot streak from the perimeter, and the Wolves (12-11, 4-2 CCAC) packed the defense in the lane to double-and-triple-team Peregrine big men. The combination stifled the Peregrine offense all night.

REC CENTER — Junior co-captain Kris Krstevski’s layup with less than 10 seconds remaining tied the score at 72-72, and when the Trojans missed their last shot attempt the game went to overtime in the Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference matchup with Trinity International University on Saturday. But with two scoring leaders and their point guard on the bench fouling out of the contest, the Peregrines (4-17, 2-3 CCAC) lost 84-76 in the extra period.

Peregrines grab win in Purdue battle with Panthers

Thursday, January 24th, 2008 - 1:01 am

REC CENTER — Two schools that share the same university name acted like mortal enemies in Wednesday’s Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference Division II game in Hammond. The Peregrines clawed and the Panthers snarled for 40 minutes before the home team claimed a 66-53 victory.

PUC earned its first consecutive wins of the season behind the game’s leading scorer Kevin Thomas (Highland). The junior 6-8 center shot 50 percent from the field scoring 18 points, while grabbing five rebounds and collecting two steals in the win.

The Peregrines trailed by a duce at the half, 36-34, but tightened the defensive screws in the second half holding the Panthers to 17 points in the final 20 minutes of action. Both teams played a hard-nosed physical brand of basketball throughout the game delivering blows that drew blood and severe bruising on both sides of the benches.

Peregrines upset Crimson Wave with 78-67 win

Sunday, January 20th, 2008 - 2:25 pm

REC CENTER — Kevin Thomas’ fade-away jumper in the lane over 6-9 Crimson Wave center Tom Radtke tied the game at 58-58 with 8:16 to play. And when freshman Antonio Hurt (Michigan City) connected on a two-footer a minute later, the Peregrines (3-16, 1-2 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference) grabbed a lead that they never gave up.

Thomas (Highland) led all scorers with 20 points, 15 in the second half, as the Peregrines knocked off Calumet College of St. Joseph 78-67 in a CCAC matchup Saturday. It was the first conference win of the season for the Peregrines.

PUC trailed 42-37 at the half and were down by as many as seven points twice in the second half. But a 12-5 run during a five-plus-minute stretch with 14 minutes to play put the ball in Thomas’ hands to tie the game.

Conference leader Judson stays perfect, beat Peregrines 80-56

Wednesday, January 16th, 2008 - 11:42 pm

ELGIN, Ill. — Freshman guard Michael Patton (West Side) nailed a 3-pointer with 12:45 left in the second half and brought the Peregrines to within seven points of the conference leading Judson Eagles. But a 14-6 run by the Eagles during the next six-plus minutes put the game out of reach leading to an 80-56 Chicagoland Collegiate Athletic Conference win for the home team.

The Peregrines (2-16, 0-2 CCAC) opened the contest with a 15-6 lead, their largest lead of the night, hitting seven of their first 13 shots. PUC kept the lead until the Eagles game-high scorer Ilija Bojanic (19 points) hit a 3-pointer for a 28-27 lead. The Eagles went on a 12-2 run to close the half with a 40-29 advantage.

The Peregrines kept within striking distance for the first seven-plus minutes of the second half before the Eagles pulled away.
