Grenadiers get first home win, beat PUC 82-63

NEW ALBANY, Ind. — The Grenadiers took advantage of a young Peregrines squad’s mistakes scoring 20 points off turnovers in a 82-63 win in the first home win of the season for Indiana University Southeast.

PUC turned the ball over 10 times in a six-plus minute stretch of the second half turning a seven-point deficit into a 20-point Grenadier lead that the home team never relinquished.

The Peregrines (0-6) trailed 43-36 with 14:55 remaining in the second half when the turnover bug bit. In their next 15 possessions, the Peregrines scored four points, but gave the ball away 10 times that the Grenadiers (2-2) turned into a 60-40 lead with 8:46 left on the clock.

Co-captain Kevin Thomas (Highland) led the Peregrines with 13 points to tie two IUS players for game-high honors. The 6-8 junior center was perfect from the field hitting four field goals, and was 5-of-6 from the charity stripe. No other Peregrine cracked the double-digit category.

Freshmen guards Delriko Curtis (Benton Harbor, Mich.) and Josh Collins (San Antonio, Tex.) scored nine and eight, respectively. Curtis also had five assists and led the team in rebounding with eight.

Off the bench, freshman forward Justin Latimore (Indianapolis North Central) finished with nine points and four rebounds. Freshman Antonio Hurt (Michigan City) scored seven points, grabbed five rebounds and had the team’s only two blocked shots.

The Peregrines trailed at the half, 36-29, after shooting 50 percent from the field and 80 percent from the foul line. In the second 20-minutes of action, the Grenadiers picked up the pace from the 3-point stripe connecting on 7-of-15, a 47 percent success rate.
