Peregrines 49-point second half not enough to secure first victory

WILLIAMSBURG, Kent. — A strong offensive output in the second half couldn’t put the Peregrines over the hump in a 78-72 loss against Edward Waters College, Fla. in the second day of the Cumberland University Invitational. The Peregrines 49-point half was the best to date in the first four games of the season.

The offense was 17-of-41 (42 percent) from the field, including three 3-pointers, and a dozen points from the charity stripe. Four Peregrines registered double digits led by junior center Kevin Thomas (Highland) who scored 18 points and tied for the team lead with eight rebounds.

Off the bench, freshman forward Justin Latimore (Indianapolis North Central) scored a dozen points, including a pair from 3-point land. For the third consecutive game, point guard Delriko Curtis (Benton Harbor, Mich.) hit double digits finishing with 11 points and a pair of steals.

Senior forward/center DeWitt Jackson (Marquette) added 10 points in the loss. Sophomore forward Marcello Sheriff (Hemet, Calif.) scored seven points and tied Thomas for team-leading rebounder with eight.

The Peregrines (0-4) outscored the Tigers 49-36 in the second 20 minutes of action and forced 32 turnovers for the game. But the second half action could not overcome a poor shooting performance in the first half in which the Peregrines were 6-of-25 (24 percent) from the field, including five missed attempts from the 3-point stripe.

PUC continues its November road-heavy schedule Tuesday in a double-header with the women’s team against preseason No. 21-ranked Bethel College, Ind. The women tip at 6 p.m. and the men at 7:30 p.m.
