REC CENTER – Early in the second half, the Peregrine offense was flat and allowed Judson College creep back into the game knotting the score at 47 following an 11-0 run with 13:29 to play. But an 18-5 run late in the final nine minutes lead to a 76-61 win for the home team. Game scoring leaders Minuyard Wheeler (Wirt) and Steve Polak (Clark) combined for 6-of-9 from beyond the three-point stripe in that stretch run. Wheeler was 7-of-10 from the field, including three 3-pointers and finished with 19 points, eight rebounds, two assists and a pair of steals. The senior captain buried back-to-back threes to extend the lead to points, 60-50. Polak finished with 13 points, five steals, three assists and three rebounds.
Sophomore Charles Cruz (Gavit) had a solid game for the second consecutive time. Cruz came off the bench early in the first half and shot 50 percent from the field good for eight first half points and six rebounds. He finished with 14 points and seven rebounds, the team leader with 57 in nine games.
Point guard Marcus Ford (Wirt) scored nine points, six assists and three steals. Vince Johnson (Bishop Noll) popped in eight points and grabbed three rebounds in the win.
The Peregrines (5-4) out-shot Judson College from the field with a 47 percent average, 39 percent from the 3-point stripe on offense. In the paint, the Peregrines out-scored the Eagles 40-24. The Peregrine bench registered 23 points. From the defensive side, the Peregrines forced the Eagles (1-9) into 30 turnovers accounting for 19 points.
The Peregrines are on the road for their next two games. Saturday they play Indiana Tech in Fort Wayne. Tip off is 4 p.m. EST. Next Tuesday, PUC will face its sister school Purdue North Central in Michigan City beginning at 7 p.m.
