DEERFIELD, Ill. – Four Peregrines scored in double digits leading to an 80-73 win against Iowa Wesleyan College at Trinity International University in the two-day tournament. On the first night of the tournament, Purdue University Calumet (3-2) beat Trinity 74-54 to sweep the weekend action.On Saturday, senior Minuyard Wheeler (Wirt) was 7-of-12 (.583) from the field for 20 points. He also had a pair of offensive rebounds and two assists. Senior point guard Marcus Ford (Wirt) finished with 18 points, including a perfect night from beyond the 3-point arc hitting four. Ford also sizzled from the field hitting 6-of-7 (.857). He also had four assists, three rebounds and one steal.
As a team, the Peregrines shot .592 from the floor. The Peregrines held a 37-32 lead at the half, and then maintained pressure to keep the Tigers (3-3) behind for the entire 20 minutes.
Charles Cruz (Gavit) was 5-of-9 from the field for 14 points. The sophomore grabbed nine rebounds, barely missing his first double-double of the season. Cruz, the team’s leading rebounder last season, has 20 in his first three games this season.
Vince Johnson (Bishop Noll) was the Peregrines’ fourth player in double figures scoring 11 points on 5-of-8 from the field. He also grabbed three rebounds in the win. Steve Polak (Clark) scored nine points before fouling out of the contest.
Purdue University Calumet hosts undefeated Indiana Wesleyan University on Saturday in the Fitness & Recreation Center beginning at 3 p.m.
